2005 Hipbase Member of the Year Award
#1

The first annual Hipbase Member of the Year Award will be given out to a member of the Hipbase community. The recipient of the award must first and foremost have a genuine love for The Tragically Hip. Secondly, the ability to come up with creative and innovative ideas for promoting the Tragically Hip, (be it fansites, promotional ideas, bootlegs, etc.). The recipient must also have a positive attitude in the forum, while providing answers and insight about the knowledge they have accumulated over years of fandom. Nominate yourself in this thread, and state reasons for why you deserve to be the Hipbase Member of the Year. If you feel like you are not quite up to the standards of becoming a nominee (there's always next year...), you can second the nomination of a prolific member that has helped you become a bigger fan of the Tragically Hip.
Out of these potential nomination applicants, several will be chosen to become official nominees for the Hipbase Member of the Year Award. A democratic vote will follow, where all Hipbase members will have the opportunity to select Hipbase Member of the Year. The winner will be announced in the new year, and will recieve a spot on the virtual Hipbase Member of the Year plaque, with fully engraved username and avatar.

I don't mean to be a downer, but... shouldn't we nominate each other, and leave it at that? Nominating oneself is un-Hip, isn't it? For example... the boys didn't nominate themselves into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame... just a thought... carry on :jump

Sorry for the double-post, everyone.. but I forgot to announce my nomination. I would like to recognize Hugh (Hugh23). This guy did me a huge solid by taking my HIP FAN license plate to the after-party here in Halifax to get it autographed, and he mailed it to me within the week when he got back home. I'll never ever forget that. Hugh is the epitome of Hip. Him and his lovely wife travel great distances to see the boys, and if you were at the Halifax show, I'm sure you saw them both going nuts in the 4th or 5th row. Here is the post I wrote after meeting him:

"Allow me to reply to Hugh's post by saying that Hugh is the most enthusiastic, fun and friendliest Hip fan ever! What a great guy. He remembered me from way back in my trading days, calling me "one of the originals" when he introduced himself at the Halifax show. Jamie had told me a bit about meeting him in Philly this year, but I wasn't prepared for Hugh and Carolyn's energy. If any of you folks ever know beforehand that you're going to a show where Hugh is going to be... seek him out. The show will be that much better for it.

Hugh, it was a pleasure!

I tried to attach the pic taken of all of us after the Halifax show, but my upload limit is exceeded. Take it from me: there is no more an enthusiastic and rabid Hip fan that Hugh. He has my vote.

Cheers, all...

LizardKing51 Wrote:You're going to have to explain this one to me, "the ability" to come up with ideas? I can sit here and come up with ideas all night big deal. I dont have a website, so that makes me less of a fan or hipbase member? Are we judging people based on the size of their bootleg collection? This is way too subjective. Recognizing contributions to the Hipbase and Hip fandom in general is fine, lots of members have done great things to help spread the music and help people get songs and boots and thats great, but why make it a competiton?

The purpose of the award is to push the boundaires of this online community. Hence, the more you do for the community, the better your chances are of winning the annual award. If you just read the forums, and listen to the Tragically Hip music, you are still a fan indeed; but perhaps you should then make the extra effort and execute your ideas in hopes of making the Hipbase community a better place, if one would wish to become eligable for the award. It is up to all members to decide the winner.

If you want to push the boundaries of the Hipbase and make it better place you dont need a "member of the year" competition to do it imo. Just start a thread and get the think tanks going, people contribute to this place on a regular basis already I dont see how this is going to make a difference, do you think someones sitting there going "how can I make the hipbase better and come up with some kick ass idea so I can be the 2006 member of the year?" Highly doubtful, I think the hard-core members and regular posters in this forum already have the motiviation and incentive to make this place better. I see it all the time here, the people are great here and very helpful to others. Ive helped members obtain tracks and songs and offered boots to ones in the past, so have lots of others, just look at the examlple Rory just gave, very nice to hear. Like I said recognizing the members contributions is a nice idea, I just think a member of the year award is a dumb idea, thats all.

I read almost everything posted here daily, although I do not reply to most posts. That being said, my nod goes to Chris (or Chris Chris as he is now affectionately known) on this one.

Chris has been a dedicated Hip fan for years, long preceding myself and I'm sure many others on the base. However, his dedication to the band and their fans has grown exponentially in the past year.

I'm sure that many of us have watched or may even possess one of Chris' many dvds. Many of those dvds may have even come from the Hiptracker. Chris has spent countless hours producing and uploading these dvds, and has helped those in need of Hiptracker assistance many times over.

Aside from being "the dvd guy", Chris has also taken on the role of administrating what used to be hipcovers.com. This, to my knowledge, has been assimilated into his own self-maintained site, hipfans.com.

I may be off on some details, I am simply trying to call it as I see it. I guarantee, however, that you would hard-pressed to find a more dedicated fan, both to the band and the 'base.

I nominate MAv. The sneak previews and bonuses he gives us always blow me away, especially the preview to the new Hip site.

I can attest to Hugh's infectious energy as Rory alluded to earlier. I met him for a few short minutes but his energy and enthusiasm was very noticeable. Him and his wife were rocking in Halifax, as I noticed more clearly while watching the DVD of the Halifax show on my computer.

I can also say that Rory, Highlander (sorry, forgot name), and Jamie were some cool cats. I met them in Sydney and Rory gave me a lift back to my hotel. I then saw them in Halifax the next night and I saw the license plate that Hugh generously took to the guys in the Hip later that night (or early the next morning I guess) while PARTYING AT A HALIFAX NIGHTSPOT. Hugh, you're one lucky duck. :thumb:

You can't forget Chris Chris and all his DVD production as well as Biga and Trevor aka ManSizedEldorado.

There are plenty of cool cats in here though. Cferneyh, LizardKing, Kleh, Intothenight, Skippy the Wonder, Dame, TheHorribleEsthethe, Drez7, Mark, etc....

Hugh is beside me on the left and Rory is on the far right holding the aforementioned plate.....

Here's my out of left field vote: Lance.

For giving us this forum, with access to sources, info and amusement we wouldn't have otherwise.

I'll second a nomination for Lance.

Chris Chris is a very close second in my mind and it is impossible to ignore his unfailing devotion to The Hip and this forum.

However, this really is Lance's brainchild and we owe him a debt of gratitude for this wonderful place. Thank you Lance.

I would like to second the MAv nomination. He has done so much for us this past little while. And to have a laision between Hipbase and the group is HUGE.

Thank you for the nominations! I don't think it is fair for me to participate. This site would not be a succes if you all did not visit and post. Everyone makes up the community.

My vote is for everyone but myself.

I need 2 Kingston Tickets, please help.

I second that! I dont want to be seen as a party pooper here because of what I posted earlier. I think recognizing the contributions of the members is a nice idea and there are alot of thank you's here and kudos that are very well deserved, I could list a bunch (but Ill just name a few) I just find it hard to choose one person over another, lots of people deserve it no question. In that vein...

Lance-what can I say, you started this train moving and its grown to be a huge success you must be very proud of what you've started and to see it grow and move forward must be a real joy for you. I still think the best is yet to come here, this place just like the Hip themselves will only get better. I plan to stick around for the ride as long as I have a PC and the internet I'll be here.

Chris,Chris-The tracker is a real blessing, your contributions to the trading and sharing of the Hip's boots and dvd's is top notch, and hipfans and hipcovers is a great, keep up the good work!

Jeremy-Lets not forget what came before torrents, the ftp. site might not get as much publicity as the tracker does now, but its still a helpful site and Ive gotten plenty of material from it so big thanks for that as well.

Stephen Dame- Your knowledge knows no bounds, your webpage full of insights into the lyrics and everything Hip related is a great resource for all of us and must of taken alot of time and effort and for that a huge thanks, never change you rock.

MAv-What can you say about this guy...he's top class, a true friend of the Hipbase and a great guy, Im sure everyone will agree with me when I say huge thanks for all the info and insights into the band, nobody made you do what did for us and we all want to thank you for that, and like you always say...the best is yet to come!

This is the part where I thank ALL the tapers and traders, too many names to name, but you know who you are.

And to everyone else, thanks for making this forum the best forum on the web! You guys rock, lots of great personalities here and I love the debates and the fun we have here. So lets keep moving forward united in love for the Hip and the awesome music they make....to 20 more years!!

Here's to the future!!!!!!! :thumb:

Hipbase.com is Lance's baby, he is ALWAYS talking about what he can do to get more people involved, and make Hipbase.com more enjoyable for hip fans. He's constantly brainstorming about new ideas, live chat, radio, podcast, t-shirts etc. He has spent hours and hours and hours (and hours) of work creating and maintaining this website. And he does have something to be really proud of.

I would have to agree that Lance has done the most for The Tragically Hip community for starting this site, having a place for all Hip fans to gather and share information, ideas and memories.

However, Hipbase.com is such a success because of all of you who visit the board regularly, post messages, give feedback and suggestions. If none of you visited this site, it would not be a success.

I agree with Lance that he should not be able to be a participant.
His reward is when all of you come here and talk about a band that you all love. All of his hard work and dedication has paid off.
