How many of those can you actually make out without being told what it's supposed to say?
Pink Floyd put a message on the wall to mock people who were looking for secret messages. And Jimi Hendrix recorded "Are You Experienced" with a backwards solo, so I suppose it would sound normal if you played it backwards....
Other than that, the whole phenomenon is the product of people with too much time on their hands. They want to find something, so they somehow make sense of the sounds.

I'm not so sure about some. Some are definite backmasks, but others are impossible to hear the words without reading at the same time. i agree, it is "a product of people with too much time on their hands."
