I've been curious about how well this new box set will sell. On the one hand, the Hip are consistently referred to as Canada's "favourite" band, but I know their sales are way down from the nineties. How well do "greatest hits" albums usually do in comparison to a band's other albums? Does it matter if this sells a lot? Will the hardcore fans avoid the new album because they already have all the songs (save two). Will the casual radio listener still care about the Hip? I hope so....

Firstly I dont think it matters, at least not to me. Of course I want it to do well, its going to be an amazing collection of the greatest Canadian band ever, I dont see why it wouldn't. Im sure the band wants it to, not just from a money standpoint, but get the music out there in one nice big package will appeal to the casual fan who doesn't want to have to buy 10 albums to get all the songs they want. And maybe make some new ones too. This box-set has something for everyone! Secondly you said (save two) new songs, make that one! We got No Threat, it was just released as a radio single just last week. Its a killer tune, listen for it.

Greatest hits packages usually do sell well. That's why record companies like to do them.
Record companies do well selling repertoire, since the non-recurring costs of producing the albums is long since absorbed. The problem with repertoire, though, is that the market -- new listeners, aging nostalgic fans with thinning hair, and people replacing albums they've lost, foolishly loaned to their brothers-in-law, or had stolen (refer to brother-in-law, above) -- doesn't want to shell out 5 x 20 bucks to get the songs they want. So they buy the greatest hits.
Box sets don't sell quite as well, for cost reasons. But they're aimed at committed fans who will buy anything the record company foists upon them, and who delight in collecting obscure bootlegs recorded with a cheap mike inside a mitten inside a tin can taped to the outside stage door. Completists, in short. I'll bet there are a couple around here.
And remember: starting about five years from now, the greatest hits will have a spike in sales and the Hip will be cool again, for the same reason the 80s are hot now, the 70s were hot in 1995, and the 60s were hot in 1985. All the people who were 15 in 1995 will be 30, will have good jobs and money, and will be reaching the age where they like to sit around and remember how cool they were way back when. That's a big market. That's why there are so many radio stations playing 80s crap now.

I'm the only member of Hipbase I know to look at a face but I know that I, my cousin, and three friends are buying the boxset. We have all attended concerts together and are Hip nuts. The boxset will sell well around these parts.

im running out between my class and midterm too pick it up. class ends at 1130, and midterm @ 130.
