Listening back to the Live 8 show, I was excited to hear the harmonica backing up 'poets.' It may or may not have made the song sound better for some people, but no one could argue that it was different. I also thought it was unique and cool when Kate Fenner sang with Gord on Flamenco on the 'evening with' tour. Just putting it out there, but how feasible would it be for this Blues Brother to tour with the boys and play an entire set rather than just one song. I think that this would be a riot. A little change from the norm. Any thoughts?

Believe me, it would piss of PLENTY of real fans as well. Aykroyd's performance was an utter abomination. He just wailed away incoherently throughout the entire song. He didn't pick his spots like a legitimate improv musician would; he just wanked off the whole number. As if that wasn't quite bad enough, what he actually played sounded awful and did not go with the song at all. Aykroyd is a painfully unfunny hack, a washed up has-been from 70's-era SNL fame whose only claim to fame was a stupid and cheesy sketch. Seeing him at Live8 was horrible - easily the worst performance of any Hip song I've ever heard / seen.
I don't know if I can make myself any more clear than that.

i agree that maybe the live8 performance with aykroyd wasn't all that it could have been. but with preparation and practice a harmonica would be an incredible sound addition to many hip songs. a tour with aykroyd would be unlikely, but it would be unique nonetheless and i would definitely pay to see it(but i'm sure we'd all pay to see the hip in any configuration). i also don't think aykroyd's comedic talent would have much influence on his musical performance.

god. that would suck. the harmonica on the live 8 show sounded terrible. i don't think it fit Poets at all.
i can't even think of a song where a harmonica would fit.

I think having ackroyd along on the tour would be just like having kate fenner along on the tour -- except a bigger, huskier kate fenner.
Maybe he'd even sing a verse or two of Flamenco.
Seriously, though, put me down for one steaming helping of "no harmonica playing funnymen" and I'd echo, with a little less vehemence, some of the stronger language above concerning the role of Dan Ackroyd in the post-1970s SNL world.

I was alright with the added guests on the "Evening With" tour, but to be completely honest, I'm fine if it never happens again. I also agree that Akroyd sounded real poor on Poets.
