They're going to be here at the folk fest soon too. Not sure what day though. I'm only going to be able to get out on Thursday and Sunday for it so hopefully one of those days but probably not I guess.
Anyone know what the schedule is for them there? No mention on the folk fest site.

I'm so friggin torn. Sam Roberts next Sunday at Cowboys is a definite, I'm dying to see Tweedy (on Thursday), but the wife wants to see Sarah Harmer (on Saturday) and I want to see The Weakerthans (on Sunday) and/or Dylan (also on Sunday, but at the Saddledome). But I don't have the coin or freedom for that many shows, especially after Wallet Sapping Stampede. All year I bitched about no good shows and then they pack 'em all into two weeks. It would be nice if these guys spread things out a little better for me! I'm guessing when it is all said and done it will only be Sam and Sarah for me. But hey, could be worse.

I'm gonna keep this thread going.
So how did everybody find out about these guys? My first Weakerthans experience was back in '97 when I saw them open for the Rheostatics at the University Theatre in Calgary. I thought the band rocked, but it was John Samson's lyrics that really blew me away. He was the first lyricist I'd heard in a long time who could match Gord Downie in the genius department. I ended up buying a copy of Fallow after the show and I've been a huge fan ever since. When they released Left & Leaving in 2000 I was completely floored by how good it was. Their first album was great, but they totally raised the bar with Left & Leaving. It's just an incredibly cool record. And just when you thought they couldn't get any better, along came Reconstruction Site in 2003, which in my opinion ranks among the greatest Canadian albums ever made. I think these guys are gonna be around for a long time, and I'm anxiously waiting to hear what they do next.

I first heard about them while reading about Ian Blurton pre-NYD 2000 show at the ACC. In an effort to learn about all the bands on the lineup of my first show, I discovered one of the greatest talents in Canadian music.
That said, it took an ex girlfriend to really get me high on these guys - she put Confessions of a Futon Revolutionist on a mix tape and I haven't looked back since. Now I can't drive through the main street of my hometown without having Left and Leaving going through my head.
Easilly in the top five, for best concerts I've been to in the past five years

I was bored so i went to the record store but i couldnt find anything that i wanted so i started trying to remember who opened for the lowest of the low when they played Art Park in Lewiston, NY. I didnt go to that show but I remembered the name of the opening band and I picked up "Fallow." Im so glad that I did.

I mostly learned about them from reviews on the hipbase, then saw them on NYE in Hamilton, and then picked up Left and leaving. Awesome lyrics, awesome music, it's a wonder they haven't 'made it' yet, though given their history and politics, maybe it's more of a choice than anything.
As a side note, 'The Prescience of Dawn' has been running thru my head alllllll day.

I first caught them in February 1999 opening for the Rheostatics at Ted's Wrecking Yard in Toronto as part of Green Sprouts Music Week (that GSMW was 7 straight nights of weakerthans and the rheos).
John K. Samson and company didn't hook me the first night as I was in my own little rheostatic world, but, after the third night I was singing along to Wellington's Wednesdays, Diagnosis and all the rest of the hits from Fallow. By the seventh night, they just became a part of me.
And now Left & Leaving is one of my desert island discs.
