I was wondering if anyone who's been to Hawaii can recommend some things we should for sure do while we're there? I'm taking an 11 day cruise of all the island and have a few excursions booked but if someone can give me an idea of some cool things I should check out, let me know.
So far I'm doing the following things: Surfing, Snorkling, Pearl Harbour Tour, Rainforest Tour, Glass bottom ship cruise, Golfing in Maui, Hawaiian Luau and an air plane trip throughout the volcanoes including Diamond Head. I have 3 days where nothing is planned so any ideas would be great.

Wow. Why not kick up your heels, surf, swim and relax? Seems like a pretty full itinerary to me!

Jamie....I'll be going down there in 41 days. Can you please take some pictures of the Black Rock area in Maui. My hotel is the Kaanapali Beach Hotel, just in case you happen to pass by it. Would love to see some pictures of the area.

Oh yeah, and from what I've been reading, the Road to Hana is supposed to be one of the most beautiful stretches of road in the world.

Where are you going to be on those 3 free days? I'm asking because the cool stuff I'm thinking of is island-specific.
On Maui the drive over to Hana is amazing. It takes forever because the road is very narrow and curvy but its beautiful. And once you get to Hana keep going until you reach the Seven Sacred Pools in Haleakala Nat'l Park. Everyone goes to check out the pools (which you can swim in if it hasn't rained too much) but a lot fewer people take the trail inland across the road. It goes for about 2 miles past several waterfalls and a huge bamboo forest. If the wind is blowing enough the sound of all the bamboo banging into each other is very cool. Everyone says to go to the summit of Haleakala for sunrise and they're right. I thought I was nuts getting up at 315am to drive up there but it was worth it. Just awesome. Then stay up there and hike down into the crater. Just remember, you're at altitude (just under 12,000 feet) so the hike back up is a killer!
Over on the Big Island you can go to the top of Mauna Kea (13,000 feet) for the sunset and then go stargazing. There are tons of observatories up there as its one of the best places in the world for astronomy. You can't go into them but they do set up telescopes for amateurs to use. It is phenomenal. And also on the island, if the lava flow is at all accessible from Kilauea you have to go find it. Really something to see.

hey jamie, maybe this is to personnal a question but how much is this costing you? I'm wondering becuase I'd like to know what its gonna take roughly to get me there one day and to do all the little fun touristy things your doing....have a great time!!

I have been to Fanning Island where you are stopping for 1 day. It is absolutely amazing. Nearly untouched by any outside influence, the place is a journey back in time. Make sure to rent a bike on Fanning and ride the trails into the middle of the island. You will be amazed.
Also, don't park yourself on the beach that you can see as soon as you get off the little boats that bring you to the island. Take the path inland about 400yds and on your left hand side is a secluded beach that not many people will find. It is honestly right out of a travel magazine..stunning.

Thanks a lot for the ideas oilfan. I'm so excited about seeing Fanning Island. The population there is apparently only 1300 or so. A cruise ship only docks there once a month and it apparently is like a huge thing for the island. We're have surfing lessons there in the morning and then the day to explore so I'll try and find this secluded beach you're talking about.
