Alright, I often read the board and I've noticed that when one person asks for song interpretations people get a little... iffy. But, when members were debating on the true meaning of Nautical Disaster awhile ago (Bismarck or relationship... etc... ) a wide variety of ideas were presented and I was able to see the song from completely new perspectives. I believe that sharing various ideas about a song meaning can strengthen one's appreciation for the lyrics...
So please bear with me and please help me!
I have always wanted to know what other people thought Grace, too was about.. I once heard a brilliant interpretation of the song, but I wasn't listening at the time and I don't remember what it was.
I'd love to hear your ideas. Thanks!

Time to fire up the ol' prostitute debate...

I don't think its about one particularly thing at all. It's about dealing with emotions/pressure (when the appearance of conflict/meets the appearance of force), and how one handles it. With skill, determination and grace, too.. Not about one person/thing/an event, uses the "imagery" of prostitution perhaps as just that, an example, an illusion. Again, that's my $0.02, but I don't think this song is about something as evident as an actual event.

I'm not much one for the "what does it mean?" debate, and "Grace, Too" is no exception. In fact, I've never even really thought about it too much--but when I'm at a Hip concert and that drum beat starts, to me the meaning is clear: the Tragically Hip's live masterpiece. It's weird...I mean, I'm so in love with that song as a live entity I'm utterly incapable of deciphering its meaning. I listen, I freak out, I sing along, I marvel, I breathe once it ends. To me, "Grace, Too" means "rock".
Sorry for totally undermining the purpose of this thread...

I have no opinion on this sort of thing whatsoever.

But really, if it's not about hockey or hookers, then it's not worth listening to.

I think you're stretching, Stephen, but I agree that this isn't necessarily all about a hooker. It depends who you assume is claiming to be "total pro."
Same same with Nautical: a lot of the interpretation of these things revolves around who you think is speaking a given line.
