Back when I was a charter member of the 2hundy club, I liked their spicy chicken burger so much, that I probably would have eaten one even if I'd found a much larger appendage inside.

You mean the fingertips don't belong in Wendy's chili?

And here I thought a major fast-food chain was finally catering to those of us with a palate for the phalanges!

Guess we as a society just not ready for the Super Human Digit Menu quite yet.

Just an update on this story from a month ago...thought I'd do my part to help the Dublin, Ohio-based Wendy's International in its damage-control efforts!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Wendy's finger incident a fluke?
Editorial: The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Las Vegas woman who said she found a fingertip in a bowl of Wendy's chili has been jailed, discredited and charged with attempted grand larceny.

On March 22, Anna Ayala said she bit into a finger in a bowl of chili in a San Jose Wendy's restaurant, and that it sickened her and her family. But Friday police said they have found no evidence to support Ayala's story. The Santa Clara County (Calif.) Medical Examiner's Office said the finger had not been cooked to the same specifications as Wendy's chili - 170 degrees for three hours. The origin of the finger remains a mystery.

Dublin, Ohio-based Wendy's International said it lost $1 million a day since the accusation. It had to layoff employees in San Francisco-area restaurants. And it still needs damage control.

Nothing hurts a restaurant or food service company more than allegations of tainted product. Ayala, 39, is expected to be in court Tuesday to face a $2.5 million grand theft charge in connection with the Wendy's incident, though the company's real loss has to be much greater.

The damage is twofold: employees lost their jobs as sales slipped; and if Ayala's accusation proves to be false, it dilutes legitimate concerns that do require legal action. The law is designed to protect citizens with legitimate civil complaints. Police said they had found 13 civil suits involving Ayala and her children.

Yet, under police scrutiny days after her allegation, Ayala said she would not sue Wendy's.

But damage had already been done.

The company became the butt of late-night talk-show jokes; its reputation was tarnished.

Wendy's responded, surveying all employees and suppliers for reports of lost fingertips. It found no credible evidence that the restaurant was the source. It announced a $50,000 reward for information on the finger, then it upped the reward to $100,000. No one has stepped forward yet.

While the courts will decide Ayala's fate, Wendy's will still have to work hard to win back the customers who went away because of publicity from the finger incident.

To that end, its Bay Area restaurants are off to a good start. This past weekend they invited folks to come in for free Frosty ice cream treats.

This brings a whole new meaning to the term "finger foods".

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I saw on the news that she is in some sort of trouble for this. Apparently it was a scam or something. She launched a lawsuit over it and then backed out when she figured out the lie wasn't going to work out.
