Hey, I did a search before I started this...and well I dont quite know how to search to find this out but...anyway... hock:

I heard that the Hip used to be (as in started out as) a cover band...is this true, and what band were they covering (I think I heard either the Stones or the Doors) Does anyone know the answer?

They were never a full fledged cover band, but like all good college bands (especially it seems, here at Queen's) played a lot of covers in the early days. While they covered Doors and Stones songs, they never stuck only to one band during performances. And right from the beginning original numbers were snuck into the set.

I've also read they were infamous for pulling a fast one on the bar management and attendance by introducing a song as a 'little known Dears tune' and proceeding to play an original... I've also read, and heard from my old High School music teacher who attended Queens that they were referred to as 'The Tragically Shit'... I don't think any one will admit calling them that now, and I suspect that those who did haven't left the Kingston area and are probably working at Kingston Penn...

I know they played at my parents bar in Grand Bend back in the 80s. My dad said that they really sucked at that point (he admits that they are great now).

As a side note, Gord talked about the bar during the Mod Club show. For anyone who was in attendance, it was when there was a caller looking forward to the Wasaga show and Gord went into a rant about Wasaga, then realised he was actually talking about Grand Bend. I thought it was pretty damn cool :thumb:

I remember reading somewhere that the band had over 100 different covers rehearsed in the early days when they were trying to gig around Ontario... everything from classic blues standards (Baby Please don't go) to Doors covers.

All bands begin as cover bands. You start out in high school, and learn to play others songs before you start to write your own. It's like reading other books before you write your own.

That being siad, they weren't a cover band in the true sense of the word. At least not the kind that plays for $200 bucks at your local pub, and butchers songs ranging from Elton John to Led Zeppelin, to John Cougar. They did play plenty of others tunes though.

The played some Doors, CCR, Them, among others.

I don't mean to split hairs here but where I come from, a band that sticks to covering one band only is referred to as a Tribute band. I play in a band part time and we cover lots of tunes by lots of different bands. We are a cover band.

I meant that I thought they were a "tribute band" in the beginning, I'm not up on my musical terminology, but that does make it less complicated...I had heard they were a Tribute band, but that was not the case...they did covers of several bands...as most bands do....anyway, again thanks for the answers..and thanks for clarifying the difference between "cover" and "tribute" band.
