1). Was listening to New Orleans is Beat yesterday. Never realized how cool that one line is, "When the river meets the end (?), it's still got a bit, of minnesota in it." Cool ref. to the missisip.
2). In "wheat kings" is the line: "Simple lottery chose the killer's fate" does that reference to the flannery o'connor short story "The Lottery"?

The Wheat Kings line is actually, "In his Zippo lighter, he sees the killer's face/Or maybe it's someone standing in the killer's place."

where its still got a bit of Minnesota in it"
2) The lyric to which you refer is "In his Zippo lighter he see the killer's face".

re Mississippi still havin' a bit of Minnesota in it ... to me, it harkens back to the "hey, north you're south" bit in the other New Orleans tune.
I've loved the Mississota/Minnesippi line since I first heard it, even though the song is not my favourite on the whole.
and re Wheat Kings, I used to think the line was "His Zippo Lighter receives the killer's fate" and I just figured it was something too deep for me to comprehend.

'Zippo lighter receives the killer's face,' is how I always heard it.
Made sense to me---he's seeing his reflection in the Zippo.

I don't know if this even needs to be said, but there are probably a few on here who are younger than me, or maybe because they're newbies don't actually know what 'Wheat Kings' is about.
It's about David Millgarde, who was wrongly convicted of murder and spent 20 years in jail before they found out the witness who saw the killing didn't actually get a good look and the RCMP did the rest.
