Monty Python
#1

after reading the kids in the hall thread, i thought i'd start a thread about the group that inspired them..Cleese would have to be my fave, and although most people nowadays know them mainly for the movies, Flying Circus was a brilliant tv show...the stream of conciousness is mind boggling, and wayyyy ahead of its time...George Harrison stated that the spirit of the beatles moved into Python...python started the same year the beatles ended...favorite sketch? hard to say..there's so many...Upper Class Twit of the year stands out, dead parrot sketch....one of my faves would have to be a sketch that probably only lasts 20 seconds..a man walks up to a cop and tells him his wallet's been stolen...cop tells him he can't help him..some awkward silence...man says to cop..."wanna come back to my place?" cop looks around (played so well by cleese)..."yeah..all right.."..

for me it's all about the movies, my favourite being The Meaning Of Life, no matter how many times i see it, i still always crack right up, especially during the intermission "wheeeeeeeeeeeere's the fish?".

Argument Clinic - so brilliantly written and Cleese and Palin really get into it. Love it. When I think about it most of my favorite Python skits are Cleese/Palin, like Cheese Shop, the dead parrot, the fish slapping dance, etc. Those two make a great team.

Last night got a late birthday/early Christmas present of the Flying Circus box set on DVD. Can't wait to start watching! And I've heard through the family grapevine that I'm getting season 2 of Kids in the Hall for Christmas. Life is good. :thumb:

OH - I forgot - Gumby brain surgery. Hysterical!

For me it's all about the movies too...the TV show was a little goofy for me, but Life of Brian and The Holy Grail are BRILLIANT.

The Frenchmen who didn't speak French...

"C'est un lapin, lapin de bois."
"Quoi?"
"It's a rabbit."
"Un cadeau."
"What?"
"A present."
"Ohhhh, un CADEAU! Oui, oui. Allons-y."
"What?"
"Let's go."
"Oh. Right. On y va."

MPFC was an abso-freakin-lutely brilliant show! Dead Parrot is hysterical, and tumbling out of my mind in no particular order, so are many others...
  • Four Yorshiremen
    Sam Peckinpah's 'Salad Days'
    Cannibalism in Her Majesty's Navy
    The Spanish Inquisition
    Spam
    Argument Clinic
    Summarize Proust Competition
The Minister for Not Listening to People
    Expedition to Lake Pahoe
Climbing Uxbridge Road (wasn't it the North face?)
    Kamikaze Highlanders
    Penguins
    The Oscar Wilde sketch
It's a Man's Life in the Modern Army (not that there's anyting wrong with that)
    Self-Defense Against Fruit
    Confuse-a-Cat
    Albatross
I'm probably missin' a few, and naah, I wasn't a total Python-geek or nuthin'.

cleese/palin could be the best comedic duo of all time...i forgot about the fish slapping dance...cleese and palin have both stated that's one of their favorite sketches..i highly reccoment the coffee table book "python anthology"(i think it's called that)..it's got everything you need to know about python, put together beautifully and really cool quotes from the boys

The movie The Holy Grail stands as being THE single greatest influence on my sense of humor. I agree with Grooveless in that Life of Brian is also tremendously funny, but I also think Meaning of Life and Live at the Hollywood Bowl are both worth a viewing.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Flying Circus show as well. Four Yorkshiremen just about made me piss my pants the first time I "sawr" it. Other gems:

Ministry of Funny Walks
Bruces
Sit On My Face [song]
I'm a Lumberjack [song]
Cheese Shop

Another of my very favorites was Are You Embarrassed Easily? Classic

Holy Grail is quite possibly the funniest movie ever made. Life of Brian is great to. Flying Circus was definetly brilliant.

Monty Python can be summed up in four words...........

SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM.........................

There are so many great skits they did, one I always found funny sounds really lame to type, but it was John Cleese just standing beside a dock, Micheal Palin had two fish in his hands, music was playing and he was just dancing around Cleese, he would dance up to him, hit him with the fish, dance back, dance up, hit him, dance back..............see what I mean, sounds lame to describe it, but anyone else that remembers this skit knows what I am talking about.........

There are way too many great movie lines to even get into, but some of my favorites:

"I think he said blessed are the cheese makers?"
"You said Jehovah!"
"Ikky Ikky Ikky Patang!"
"Red......no....yellow....................aahhhhhhhh!"

From the show:

"A wink is as good as a nod to a blind bat"
"Is she a goer?"
"This is an ex parrot"

Just a few that pop into my head right now............this list could go on forever........ Big Grin

I still love Monty Python. The ministry of silly walks is one of the funniest things i've ever seen.

Has anybody seen the funeral of Graham Chapman? John Cleese said something like...."I could say that you were a great guy....a great friend...but i won't....you were a freeloading bastard and good riddance!" It was hilarious and everybody laughed.

In fact, the 5 remaining members gathered on new year's day 2000 somewhere in England. They put Chapman's ashes in a canon and shot it over a hill. That was his last wish. Great story.
