“The most successful moments are usually silent and usually solitary.”
The article was worth reading for that line alone. What a great mantra. Thanks!

Yes, good article. I love learning more about the mind behind all the genius lyrics. It sounded as if the writer was a fan, too.

Thanks for the link, Dana. Gord at his Gordliest. I liked the writer's observation:
"Downie, responding as an artist first, and as a business man not at all, sounds offended that those questions should even be asked — something he is more than entitled to feel considering how much of his life he’s put into his music."

"The reward comes in the work and doing it and that great intangible indescribable ‘wow’ feeling."
That pretty much sums up the feeling and reward I get when I see the Hip live! :thumb:

I agree it's a good interview, but the writer (Mike Bell) is definitely NOT a fan. He's had a hate-on for the Hip for the past 15 years. As long as I can remember he's never given any of their albums more than 2 stars, and he's always taking petty jabs at the band's music, their fans, and even their live show. To get a sense of how much of a jerk this guy is, here's a few of his Hip reviews from past years:

Wow

hock: This Bell guy needs to take his head out of his ass maybe long enough to actually listen to the albums, he has a hate on for Phantom Power big time. That was a great album, this guy is no Hip fan :rambo: He's an idiot.

Yup. Like I said, he's definitely not a fan. What strikes me as odd is that the Calgary Sun has at least three entertainment writers who do stories and reviews, and yet somehow this jackass always gets picked to do articles on the Hip, even though by this point the editors must know how much he hates the band. These days he probably does it just for his own personal amusement. "Hey, the Hip have a new album out and they're coming to town again. Now's my chance to shit on them some more, hehehe!"
Don't get me wrong though. Everybody has the right to their own opinions, and I don't expect every critic to like the Hip. At first I didn't mind that he hated the band. I just figured they weren't his cup of tea, or he just didn't get them, and that was perfectly cool. But over the years I've noticed that he's made it a personal thing. Like it's his mission as a journalist to try and destroy the Hip whenever they roll through town and insult their fans in the process. As a sometime journalist myself, I don't think that's cool. I did notice last week that for the first time since 1995, someone other than Mike Bell reviewed their show at the Saddledome...and guess what? It was a good review. Not very well-written mind you, but nonetheless a favorable review of the band and their music. From what I've read so far on this tour, they've been getting rave reviews right across the board, which is great.
Oh, and I'd also like to add that "asshat" is my new favorite insult. Thanks j-monster!
