First time caller... long time listener.
I have been into the Hip since I heard them back in 89. I didnt' know who they were... and then when, the now defunct, napster came around, I started searching for that old band who sang that song about New Orleans. When I found NOIS, i saw other songs... my eyes were opened. I started getting every version of every track I could lay my hands on.
I have something like 1 GB of TTH songs and vid clips.
I was so excited to have a new album come out this week. I went to the small music store in the mall and said "do you have the tragically hip "in violet light"?" they said "who?" I said "tragically hip"... and they looked in the computer and said... "we have one box that has just come in and isnt' even on the shelf yet." So they got me the first one out of the box.
I almost ran to my car to pop the disc in my player. My plan was to listen to the entire CD start to finish and hear all of the new songs.
Now, I know sometimes when you hear new music for the first time, that it night not sink in and it might take a few listens to really groove with the song.
But i have listened to it about 4 times and I can't get into it. It seems that something is missing... almost like they lost a member. Does anyone else see/hear what I mean?
The few acoustic songs that have been release previously (Thompson Girl, 38 Years Old, Ahead By a Century) have been amazing. I listen to them almost daily. I have been searching for acoustic versions of the harder songs like NOIS. Wouldn't that be a cool thing? I only have about 20 versions of NOIS but they are all electric.
I suppose that I wasn't expecting TTH to come out with such a diffent sound. I do like Silver Jet and All Tore Up. But the others just don't grab me. And I should mention that there are older songs that just don't grab me either.
This is meant in NO WAY to diminish the Hip. They are a great band. I wish so badly that they would come down south to do a few shows near Atlanta.
