so i finally got an optical mouse, it is most excellent, especially when compared to that piece of shit rodent i had living on my desk before.

Definitley the way to go. It's like going from an ox-cart to an automobile. Like anything else, you get what you pay for, so there are varying levels of quality and efficiency.
I requisitioned a basic optical mouse at work and ended up with a Microsoft Intelli-Mouse Explorer. Its ergonomic "fit", smooth motion and precise control spoiled me to the point that I quickly purchased one for use at home, replacing my HP-provided optical mouse. There's a wireless version also but they're hell on batteries so they're a bit costly in the long run.
One of the best peripheral investments I've made.
