I think some time ago people decided it wasn't. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's not Gord's wife.

I don't know if Gord is married to an Oriental woman or not, but they used a marriage of different ethnicities for the video because the song is based on how a policeman was forced to protect a man charged with spreading (I think) anti-semetic messages, while the cop was torn between protecting the man as per his job and his wife/family which I believe were the target of the hate messages...am I close on this one???

Did Gord really say that about John Hiatt's set list?
Thanks for the Bobcaygeon info.

Yes, he really said that...I laughed when I heard Gord say that bit for the first time. He pretends to be frustrated and everything..."I can't use this!!" Apparently someone left it taped to the stage at the High Sierra Music Festival in California, 1995-07-10. One of my favourite bootlegs. Check it out!

'Rodents' is indeed in the Poets video, which is a little gag on the fact that that video was shot in Kingston's House of Cats (in which several hundred cats are housed and tended to by one very noble but peculiar individual).
And, Chives' analysis of the BC video is bang-on. Gord does indeed play a cop in a 'mixed marriage' forced to defend white supremacists' right to free speech ('the men they couldn't hang...with that Aryan twang'). That's based on an actual incident in Toronto. It's left ambiguous, but my sense is Gord's character doesn't really take the action his job demands in terms of protecting the racists from their rioting opponents, in song or video.
My favourite part of that shoot is the study of Downie's face in the second verse. There's such poignant emotion on his face---I don't know if he can act, but he shows terrific subtlety there.

Many of the names of the band's from the videos are references to bands that the members of The Hip were in prior to being in The Hip.
The Rodents - Poets
The Prisonoires - Something On
The Constellations - Bobcaygeon: Fits the lyrics of the song. (The Constellations reveal themselves, one star at a time...)
There are more, but I can't remember right now.
KWT - I don't see what connection you are implying between the house of cats and the band name.
The cat house was featured on an episode of Donahue, just prior to The Hip shooting their video there.

i think by KWT means that rodents in a house full of cats is kind of an oxymoron........
or that the cats are hunting them

You know, that's sort of a let down. I'd always pictured Gord with a more plain and down to earth chick. Real intellectual. Well perhaps his rock star wife is hot and intelligent. Who knows.
