I was listening to the 96 Cleveland show this morning on my way to work, and I was reminded how amazing that tour really was. I'll go out on a limb and say that was the Hip at their peak. That's not to say they have diminished in talent or anything, just that I feel they were at the peak of their Canadian popularity then.
I was at the Saskatoon show for that tour and it still stands out as one of the best I've seen...18 shows so far in total. What I remember the most was the crowd was really into the Hip and extremely participatory(sp?) for almost every song. It seemed people knew the lyrics for every song, even the new ones off Henhouse, and sang them out for the whole show. Scared really stands out in my mind because not only was the crowd singing, but everybody was clapping in unison for the whole song. Something about a packed arena clapping and singing in unison that is just amazing.
Listening to the Cleveland show (great job whoever recorded it!) brought back a lot of those memories. You can clearly hear the crowd singing along to many of the songs, something you don't get on many bootlegs.

I have to add to Billy's comments regarding the Henhouse tour. I went to both Winnipeg shows that November of 96, and I can't remember the boys ever being more "on". I had crap seats for both shows, but it didn't matter for those two blissful nights. I find myself reliving the shows 3 or 4 times a year from the great recordings I have. If any of you folks want the perfect Hip show, try to find the 11/20/96 Winnipeg show. A masterpiece.

For some reason I remembered this thread and I think it deserves a bump. My first Hip show was November 19, 1996 in the old Winnipeg Arena. There is something about the setlists and the tightness of the band on the Henhouse and Phantom Power tours that make me think that was their peak live.
Rory recommended the second night of the Henhouse tour in Winnipeg but people should also check out the Winnipeg Phantom Power show.

I wish I wasn't in sixth grade in 2000, and appreciated music. Wow, I would have been all over the "evening with" tour. That would be prime, 30 or so songs everynight? That would be exhilirating if they pulled that stunt twice.

wow...I'm ancient...cool to see someone so young into the hip though... Ah, the '96 tour...what a great one...had great seats for Cobo hall, one of the best shows I've ever seen, by anyone!!!! The best were just so "on"...plus I saw 'em earlier at Eden Fest, and they were amazing then too.....yup, 96-99 was a very special time......

that cleveland show was the first I had seen them. it blew us away. Have seen a couple of shows that come close to matching the passion of that night.

I'm jealous that you are all old, I mean, c'mon guys... you got see The Hip in the nineties... what a treat. If only I was older then, I would have seen them on every tour. I missed my chance to see Titanic Terrarium live. I missed my chance to see Toronto #4 live. And worst off, I've missed my chance to see The Last Of The Unplucked Gems live. Curses to you all!

I saw them on the tail end of that run in 97. (Night Bush's lapdog came to power :-( )
I have been to see a lot of bands at a lot of venues, but The Hip blew them all away easily.

Hi All,
New to The Board, committed fan. I was looking through the concert lists and could not find the show I saw in mid to late 90's. It was a "surprise show", we had to get our pictures taken through a polaroid camera on a special background. They served as our tickets. Anyways, could not find that show on the list... That being said, maybe there was 350 people at the show, I was leaning on the stage (G-side) with my beer groving to all the TATH material. It was a fantastic show, one of my top 3.
I look forward to talking all things Hip with you all...

It's weird, but the Henhouse tour is one of the ones I remember the least. The ones that stand out for me were seeing them at McMaster back in the Road Apples days (hi! I'm old too! I saw them back in 1989!), the Bill's Bar concerts in Boston for the Phantom Power tour, and especially the Somerville Theatre concerts for In Violet Light. The only time I haven't really thought they were "on" was at the Somerville M@W shows, but that's probably more because of the weirdness of having Chris & Kate involved in the show (although I saw them at ACC later in the tour, and it was great).
Part of it may be that, for the most part, I've gotten to see them in smaller venues, where it's easier for the band and the audience to lock into the same vibe. I'd probably think differently if I'd stayed in Canada, and seen them mainly at arena shows.
