In Elvis Costello's song "Town Cryer" on the Imperial Bedrooms album, he sings "I'm so teddy-bear tender and tragically hip". Does anyone know if there is any connection between this line (from 1982) and the Hip's name? Or did they both get the phrase from the same source?

Michael Nesmith (formerly in The Monkees) was a perfomer in a collection of music videos and comedy skits called "Elephant Parts" and the FAQs state that the Hip got their name from a line in that collection. I'm wondering if Elvis Costello got the phrase from the same source or made it up independently. The video with Nesmith was from 1981 and the Costello album from 1982. Anybody know?

I've seen the phrase used many times in different situations. Just do a search for it on google.
