What are your thoughts on these two songs? I consider them to be two of my favorites........but often feel as though I'm in the minority.

I love The Rules and am indifferent regarding Toronto #4. I love Johnny's straightforward drumming, and the overall sound of The Rules.

I think my favorite song (one of them anyway) is Another Midnight. I love that tune, Up to Here is definitely my fave album. I dont hear that from people much either. To each is own, everyone hears things differently I guess. :roll:

From what I've gathered over the years, Another Midnight seems to be one of the most fan requested songs that they don't/won't play.

I love both songs. I am a huge fan of most of the Hips softer, more mellow songs...

Love Toronto#4...I think it's one of the most (if not THE most) poignant song in the Hip catalogue.
I like the rules....as long as they don't play it at any future show I'm at! Definitely an album track and not a great live track. It kills the momentum of any show I've been to that features the tune.

Speaking of breaking momentum, I have always felt Membership did that. I know I'm probably alone in saying this, but Membership is by far my least favorite song. I remember when PP came out, there was lots of hype about this song. I didn't like it at first listen, but because of all the talk, I gave it a good chance. After hearing it many times live and many times on the album, I can honestly say it's my least favorite.
I'd much rather hear Coconut Cream and/or Butts Wigglin' than Membership.

Good Life has been the biggest mood-killer at most shows I've encountered - it's dull, repetitive, and completely indistinguishable from the album version.
I loooove The Rules. Awesome lyrics, beautiful melody. I liked Toronto #4 a lot when I first got M@W but now I feel it pales in comparison to some other great songs on the album. I guess because it was the first song I absolutely 100% liked, it was the first one I got tired of.

So, I never really was into T4 at all. Until the first time I heard it live. It was the best song of the night (you never know which song it's gonna be!). I have played the heck outta that song at home on my hi-fi system and love it. I've seen it played live twice since; It's never been quite the same as that first night. Killer tune, though. The Rules is a fine song. Not in the same league PERSONALLY, but for some fans I see how it could be. As for the previous post, I'll completely agree. Membership is the stick in the mud of the Phantom Power album and at the live shows. It plods.
PS...Anyone else hear the sonic similarites (esp. the bassline) between T4 and Use It Up?!?

Word Neil! I have nothing against the song but it is the new buzzkill on this tour.

i really like toronto #4 and think the rules is a good tune love the lyrics but just something about the way gord sings the chorus, to me they could have done a better job with the chorus.

I'm with Billy on 'Membership,' and, as I said in another thread, the real problem there is the boring drumming. The song needs something to lift it---preferably thundering drums to mimic the river that the lyrics talk about.
'Good Life:' I've heard other lambaste this tune as a set-killer. I don't know what they're talking about. I find it to be one of the most powerful moments in their sets: it's such a beautiful, poignant tribute to fellowship and music and life on the road. I feel like crying when Downie belts it out. 'Get with the times' always gives me shivers...coming as it did in the wake of 9/11 and all.
I understand people enjoying 'Another Midnight,' but I'm pretty sure that Downie finds it embarassing. It reeks of undergraduate poetry to me...
TO #4 has an interesting overall sound, but I find the melody uninteresting and the lyrics too abstract, as they are on that entire album. A very, very minor Hip tune IMHO. 'The Rules' is...OK. I always thought the IDEA behind the song was better than its execution. For my money, there are plenty of superior Hip songs of that 'mellow' ilk include 'Flamenco,' 'Scared,' 'Fiddler's Green' and even INOIB off the new CD.
But that's just me.
A question: if you really dig 'Rules' and TO #4, are you a huge fan of Coke Machine Glow, which develops that whole mellow facet of Downie's writing?

Absolutely! CMG is one of my all-time favourite non-Hip Canadian albums. Abstract art-folk roots-rock...nothing like it has EVER been made.
