The Hip did...they registered half a dozen domain names to prevent pirates from setting up parallel sites.

They should have a link on every fake page for the real hip.com, though!

Not according to internic: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.internic.ca/whois.asp?domain=tragicallyhip.com&wserver=whois.internic.ca">http://www.internic.ca/whois.asp?domain ... nternic.ca</a><!-- m -->

<!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.RedWidget.com">www.RedWidget.com</a><!-- w --> is the registrar.

"Anny Randel" registered tragicallyhip.net, .org and .info
"David Lavery" has thehip.net

"Friends Of The Tragically Hip" at U of Alberta have thehip.org

Universal Music owns thehip.ca, while The Tragically Hip Incorporated on Spadina Avenue in Toronto owns thehip.com

I'm getting some major dejavu with this conversation. I think I've seen the exact thing a few years ago at the henhouse or something.

As I was typing out my previous post, I thought the same thing... but I searched Hipbase, and my computer, but couldn't find anything.

Oh well, it's still an interesting topic.

I don't think it was here. I'm sure it was at the henhouse, not sure if it was the old or newer one though. oh well.

The only 'archive' that I can't search is the old Henhouse, and I'm pretty sure that's where it was.

This has come up here before. Somebody posted the "Peck Fan Club" site on here before, because I've seen it and I'm not a member of the Henhouse.

If the people who registered all those domains aren't affiliated with the Hip, why did they not put content on their sites? If they went to the trouble of registering the domains, why wouldn't they use it?

I assumed that the lack of content on those sites was evidence they were owned by the Hip...

I think some people purchase domains thinking there is potential to profit from it.

ie. Gord and the boys want their site changed tragicallyhip.com. But some one already owns that domain, so they then pay the guy a couple thousand dollars to take-over the domain.

It makes sense really.

They do that all the time with political campaigns as well, one story I heard was that Kerry's campaign paid a guy who registered johnkerry.com first around two thousand dollars for the name. They also try to snap up the anti-bush or anti-kerry names to keep them out of the other sides hands. Not that doesnt work or anything :lol:
