I don't know how detailed you want, but every report I have ever seen claims it rails against people like Toby Keith (since country music is most likely to appeal to Republicans) who use their music as a political axe and rally round their leader regardless of his actions...or people who just act like the US is so big and tough, in prototypical "american cowboy" style...with songs like '(Kickin' Your Ass) Courtesy of the Red White and Blue'...or whatever that one TK song is called.

Another aspect of the song (from what I've read) is that it was written while being stuck in Nashville while on tour with nothing to do for two nights.

I read that the song "....Nashville...."was inspired by a picture of Toby Keith in Iraq.

However, "....Red, white and blue" was written and recorded in support of the war in Afganistan.

Toby did go to Iraq as a part of the USO tours as did many artists, actors, etc.

This is his current big hit. "American Soldier"

I don't see how Toby is a Diplomat but I can see the "It can't be nashville every night" comes into play.

I think also it could be about how Bono is going everywhere and being a "diplomat" , you know "he said fuck this and fuck that, and this guys a diplomat"

I always took the diplomat line to be ironic...referring to people like Toby Keith who put themselves front and centre in political matters with nothing valid to say, just to puff themselves up...that is to say, the exact opposite of Bono. I perceived it to be a criticism rather than a simple image...

What I want to know is why are we sending musicians to be 'diplomats'? I mean former Primeministers, former Presidents, sure. Look at Jimmy Carter.

I reckon it's the only way we can get people back home to care. I don't think it affects people in the country in question who our societal ambassadors to them are...it's just a way of attracting attention. I wish somebody like Bono would speak out against what's happening in some African countries.

Sudan is enduring a slaughter, Zaire is ruled by a man more ruthless than Saddam Hussein (Mugabe), and CNN's flavours of the month of past years like Sierra Leone aren't out of the woods by a long shot just because we don't hear about them...

I knew many people who were from Africa when I lived in MN. Lots of terrible things going on there. I agree with you.
