This is from the Sunday Edition (8-22-04) of The Detroit News/Detroit Free Press on page 2a under the "Newsmakers" Section. (I couldn't find this in the online edition). This small section features national and local entertainment news:
The Tragically Hip will kick off a U.S. tour
Sept. 18 in Detroit. The veteran Canadian rock
act will be touring in support of its latest album,
"In Between Evolution".
Less than a month until the U.S. tour starts and less than 3 weeks until the Kingston show. I have a feeling The Hip are going to "wow" us with really diverse set lists. You know that IBE will be a major part of any show, but I'm hoping they draw on songs from every album.
Can't wait...very excited... :jump

I think when they tossed in springtime in vienna on the canada day show, that just told you something was coming. I hope they do it.

you know.. actually it is all up to Gord Sinclair...
I've talked setlist strategy with him a couple of times from past tours
and he definetly tends to "warm up slowly" with the setlist on the early parts of the tour and then gets diverse as the hit the middle dates of the tour...
That said, since Boston is early on the tour, I hope this year is different...
Word of advice, If you see Gord S. pre-show and have a valid request
(i.e something funky that they HAVE Played but not in a long time, let him know... During the last tour in 2002, I told him Boston hadn't seen "Locked" since 1998 and sure enough, he put it in the setlists back-to-back two nights in a row!"
now I've given up on requesting things like "get back again" but I'm hoping to see a return of "Bring it all back to me" or "Cordelia"... I can dream, can't I?)

We were hanging near the bus at an Albany show when Gord S came by...we got chatting with him and he asked if we had anything we'd like to hear and we said "locked". Sure enough, and with Gord D annoucing it was by special request, they played it. That's the only show we've seen that we don't have on CD!!

Believe me, we would if we could...there is only one person we know who has it...on video...and he was sitting right beside us...but we haven't been able to get it from him. He goes to every signle show and often doesn't mark his tapes...so he doesn't know which on it is.

hey locked do i know you? you're a local boston fan, wondering if i have met or run into you before...
as for the diverse set list... i wouldnt bet on it. as with any band, the more albums they make, the harder it is to keep the gems in the set. the new stuff will dominate and the rest will be the standards, courage, poets, grace, and yes springtime is a standard in my opinion.
Even locked, blow and wheat became standards during the last tour.
so what exactly is a GEM or NUGGET these days. and forget about get back again... would nois or 100th be considered a nugget amonst all the new recent material?
they rehearse songs, and they only play what is reheared. they rehearse enough songs to have a set that is changable from night to night. both Gord and Rob have told me this. They are very reluctant to stray from those safe songs. so if you make a request.. make it that they start rehearsing a song, rather than whip it out that night.
my guess is that they will only have about 4-5 gems, which they will rotate over the short short tour.
my wishes for 4-5 gems... yawning, sherpa, long time running, greasy
in reality... they will be more like... 700ft, iod, bones, NOIS
