The Tragically Hip – Phantom Power
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Take what you will of this... ignore it, add to it, cherish it, whatever
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For those who don’t already know, the cover for this is a piece of Air Force flight line-testing equipment. I looked and looked and then looked some more but I’m not big on this area of information. Anybody find anything on the actual device?

Anyway, "Phantom powering" is a method of providing power to microphones by applying a voltage to the same wires that carry the audio signals.

You might recognize this from PP tour posters... not exactly that but the same....

The Image Of The Eye In The Palm Of The Hand

“What does it mean? The pancultural Eye-in-Hand icon manifests the integral and interactive bond between two essential human functions: sensing/observation (the Eye) and doing/acting (the Hand). Together these two abilities represent the most effective symbolic condensation of the ideals of human existence - omniscience (all-knowing) and omnipotence (all-powerful) - in a very simple two-part icon: the Eye in the Hand.”

The Kabbalah

“Kabbalah is an aspect of Jewish mysticism. It consists of a large body of speculation on the nature of divinity, the creation, the origin and fate of the soul, and the role of human beings. It consists also of meditative, devotional, mystical and magical practices which were taught only to a select few and for this reason Kabbalah is regarded as an esoteric offshoot of Judaism. Some aspects of Kabbalah have been studied and used by non-Jews for several hundred years”

“The word "Kabbalah" is derived from the root "to receive, to accept", and in many cases is used synonymously with "tradition".”

“The Jewish mystical doctrine known as "Kabbalah" (="Tradition") is distinguished by its theory of ten creative forces that intervene between the infinite, unknowable God ("Ein Sof") and our created world. Through these powers God created and rules the universe, and it is by influencing them that humans cause God to send to Earth forces of compassion (masculine, right side) or severe judgment (feminine, left side).”

Sacred Geometry

Look familiar?

“a diagram of the continuous process of Creative Generation”
From Rawson, “The Art Of Tantra”

“A geometric power symbol. The ancient yogis of India considered it to be the most powerful of all known geometric power symbols. Represents the geometric structure of the sound of creation—OM.”

“Meditation on the Sri Yantra will bring enlightenment and that all the secrets of the universe will be revealed to the person who meditates on it until its image is engraved in the mind. This form also has the ability to focus, balance and increase the level of life force energy. The key is experiencing Sri Yantra as a “star gate” to the Zero Point of Source from which all manifestation ultimately comes."

-----------------------

“The term "sacred geometry" is used by archaeologists, anthropologists, and geometricians to encompass the religious, philosohical, and spiritual beliefs that have sprung up around geometry in various cultures during the course of human history. It is a catch-all term covering Pythagorean geometry and neo-Platonic gometry, as well as the perceived relationships between organic curves and logarithmic curves.”

“Sacred Geometry is the blueprint of Creation and the genesis of all form. It is an ancient science that explores and explains the energy patterns that create and unify all things and reveals the precise way that the energy of Creation organizes itself. On every scale, every natural pattern of growth or movement conforms inevitably to one or more geometric shapes.”

Alchemy

Symbols from CD Booklet

-----------------------

A sign for aqua regia or agua regalis, Latin for king's water. Aqua regia was a mixture of three parts concentrated hydrochloric acid to one part concentrated nitric acid. It was used by the alchemists to dissolve gold. Gold was different from the other metals, for it withstood the usual acids and other dissolvants.

This is the most common graph for the sign of Capricorn, the Goat. The sign was used in alchemy to denote fermentatio, i.e. the process of fermentation

-----------------------

The graph for the zodiac sign Libra, the Scales. The sun enters this part of the zodiac sometime around September 23, and exits somewhere near October 22. The signs have been used in alchemy to signify sublimate, i.e. the result of a sublimation. The process of sublimation in alchemy consists of heating up a substance until it is transformed into a gas. Afterward the gas is cooled so that the substance once again becomes solid, but without passing through the liquid stage.

This graph is a different signs for the moon's south node. See the above entry for data about the nodes of the moon. According to astrology the south node in the natal chart is associated with sacrifices and efforts that life demands without giving anything in return. Both the north and south nodes are associated with blood ties and sexual contacts that lead to childbirth.

Yeah, I don't think the majority of this stuff will get me through my day but it does give ya a different idea of Phantom Power after you read it, like they weren't completely purposeless in putting the symbols for creativity and the eye in the palm on it... Regardless of this, I'm just putting it out there into the hipbase continuum...

It's definitely interesting theory. I wonder how much the band has to do with art design?

Doesn't Rob usually handle all the visual artistry? I don't just mean his own painting gracing IVL's cover (or perhaps I should say IVL disgracing Rob's great portrait...?????????????)...I heard he was solely responsible for M@W and Fully Completely back in tha day.
