The writer is refering to Mott the Hoople. Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson's band from the 70's...I believe. "Once bitten, Twice Shy" and "All the Young Dudes"...etc.

Bad thing...it means you're not familiar with R.E.M.'s Man On The Moon, one of the greatest songs ever written and my favourite song by far.
