Just wondering what the average time was, doesnt matter if u used professioal help our just taught yourself

I've been playing for about 7 years myself, but I picked up the basics rather quickly.
If such is your goal, you never really stop "learning to play".

D-Man taught me in a couple of days how to "play" the guitar. In reality I don't think that there is enough time in the world for me to finish learning how to play better.
What songs do you want to learn? And what parts? As I have learned, there is a huge difference between lead and rhythm.
But as with everything in this life, being good at anything requires loads of hard work - and a little bit of luck.

I started on the guitar in '99 when I was... 16? yeah, 16...
Anyway, within the first year I could play really basic songs like Free-Falling by Tom Petty and just basically songs with 3 or 4 chords. Well, five years later and I'm actually pretty good. I cannot for the life of me sing and strum the guitar at the same time unless it's a very simple beat like 1, 2, 3, 4-and, 1, 2, 3... etc.
I don't know how to play Bobcaygeon so I can't tell ya if it's supereasy or not. I have never had professional training. I had a friend skilled on the guitar show me some of my first chord progressions and riffs. If I were you, I'd start small -- basic chords to the songs. Don't even worry about strumming patterns until you can finger chords without skinnin the cat.
Then after you can strum a chord and get the fingerings right, and the calluses have stopped screaming at ya in your sleep :lol: , try doing up more complex stuff. For what it's worth, I could give ya advice and suggestions for songs to learn. PM or something so we're not taking up all this forum space. I have just started getting into superriffs, kinda tricky but once they're memorized, supereasy.
Supereasy songs by the Hip to play?
(Just chords, of course)
Greasy Jungle, Scared, 50 Mission Cap and Wheat Kings
Then basic riffs...
Fight, Bring It All Back and Little Bones would probably be lesson four...

I started playing 6 months ago, I've practised for at least about 20 minutes every night, and I would say that although I'm still learning, I can now officially play guitar. I have about 30 songs I can play <minus solos> mostly Hip, Beatles, Blind Melon and Neil Young.

gratt. heres the thing. unless you are picking "mary had a little lamb" on the high e string, you got to get used to the feel of the guitar. get someone to show you "power" chords and you can play almost any song to a point. to just learn a few songs is like saying..." i just want to learn to drive enough to go to the store once or twice"
you go to get the feel and get used to the chords and changing the chords. just learn a coulpe of chords and change back and forth.
the first six months are the hardest. then its awesome.

My younger brother started playing probably a year in a half ago or so. Hes gotten pretty good everytime I come home hes got something new for me to listen to. Hes just been teaching himself by printing tabs of the internet. I was impressed how much he could learn so fast. I'll have to ask him for my details about how long it took him and such when i'm home. One of the easier hip songs or at least the chords he knows is Wheat Kings. I'll have to have him teach me someday

in January it will be 3 years
i took lessons for about 6 months
i usually play for about 2- 4 hours everyday
if you told me to learn any song, i would be able to play it

It took me about 10 minutes or so to learn. actually once i figured out where the cord plugs into i was ready to go. granted, i dont know any chords, but i am in a band so that counts for something!!!!!
