Gord's Ranting
#1

I took a moment to reflect on this the other day. I remember the first time I saw The Hip in concert I thought to myself that the show would have been so much better had there not been so much ranting during the songs and had Gord just let the music go on. Now I become almost disappointed if a song is played almost exactly as per the album, without any ranting or jamming in between.

Anybody else gone through this kinda change of heart?

Ever since I saw my first hip show, I love to see Gord ranting during the concert. Like you said, I am disappointed when he doesn't.

It is a little shocking the first time you see them live - you wonder what the heck is going on. But once you come to know Gord's antics and rants, you can't get enough of them. I certainly love the files that were floating around a while ago where someone compiled a bunch of his rants. That really should be done again with some of his newer stuff.

I guess the best part about his ranting is that you get to experience first hand the development of some new lyrics. It really makes you feel like you are part of the process.

Do you have a link to that compilation of rants? That sounds cool :thumb:

If you are talking about Kerfuffle - I have it.
B+P anyone?

Is it the 'Gather Round the Fan' compilation that includes demo's, covers and rants, that you guys are talking about?

I too am fond of the ranting and antics, many times trying to anticipate some of the stuff if i've seen them enough on one tour. The 'big red canoe' in Poets and 'pink moon' in ABAC are some of my favourites right now. As for antics - the 'tail feather' and 'gun' motifs are great, as well as when Gord 'picks' ten people for the lifeboat in Nautical! Fine, fine moments all of them!
All for now,

Anybody know if he makes the stuff up on the spot, or is he trying out new material previously written.

There's one rant I recall where he says something along the lines of (paraphrasing here): "Its a beautiful thing. You walk on stage and say the first thing that comes to your mind..." Made me think he goes up there and just (the first time anyways) makes something up.

Many of the rants are reoccuring (ie microphone stand), yet some are made in the heat of the moment in reaction to the crowd. A prime example would be "here come the tits" from the Wasaga show.

Sometimes rants are from future songs.
At the NYD 2000 show during Gift (I think) he ranted all of 'as I wind down the pines'. It's interesting to hear boolegs from awhile back a hear the new lyrics in progress.
Another cool one was at Woodstock, I think at the end of Poets he did a 'Bear' rant, then he recited a whole verse in between songs which went right into Courage. really cool!

I LOVE Gord's rants. I 100% feel that the lyrics to them should be accessible to fans. But sadly nobody seems to agree with me. I have a site, it's not much but I try to transcribe the rants I hear. If anybody wants, you can help out and send some to me. Just to have them all in one place... :thumb:

LB: I've been hitting up your site for comparisons every time i do any lyrics. I love it. It's gotten me over some stumbling blocks more than once. One of these days i'm going to have to take everything i've done and stick it online. Not enough people 'get' the whole transcription thing.
