Summer's Killing Us again....
#1

The song actually works for me and is probably my 2nd favourite track on the album, but I realize people seem to be divided between liking it and not really being into it. I'm not musically inclined at all but I was wondering if anyone else saw the potential in parts of SIKU to becoming a better song...for example I would have loved to be the producer and taken out the spastic intro and end of the song, and maybe built on the riff that occurs on "And does your family know your wishes cause...". That tempo change on the bridge would have been cool to hear as the tempo for the entire song...but this is just me, I can't even play an instrument. But I see potential for a bit more, anyone else feel like they could have tinkered with this song?

I can't even start a serious topic Sad Oh well..."It's not the band I hate it's their fans" - Coax Me, Sloan.

Hey...no...no hurt feelings!! It was just all in good fun. I think the suggestions that you made are interesting, and SIKU could be a totally different, and equally good tune.

Ouch.... :?

I will not give up. My face is set,my gait is fast,my goal is heaven,my road is narrow,my way is rough,my companions are few,my guide is reliable,my mission is clear. I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, diluted or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity,or meander in the maze of mediocrity. I will not give up,shut up or slow down....Blessed Be!

it's one of my faves on the album..love it the way it is..to me it's got the "something on" stigma...a single that doesn't get the respect it deserves...

After the line "Canada lost. Go home." I think there should be a solo.

The only part I don't like about the song is the line "Summer's Killing Us!"...Gord sounds like he can't hit it.

I think that Gord's straining to hit the "Summer's Killing Us" line really adds to the song. It also adds that much more to the live performance of the song. When I first heard this song I really wasn't a fan. However, after seeing it live twice and listening to the album countless times, it has definitely made its way close to the top of my list.

Generally I don't care for Gord's 'strained' voice, but I think it works wonderfully on this tune. I love the whole amusing swagger of the song---'this tune'll do ya like the dishes!!'---and Downie's crankiness at missing out on summer due to touring. As usual, he manages to take a cliche ('band whines about its job') and make it whacked. Besides, 'Canada lost, go home!' is a great gag about the Hip's status as National Band---even better than the wisecrack in 'Fireworks.'

In other words, the song kicks!! And a vocal that didn't careen on the edge of disaster would make the song less freewheeling, and probably a lot less funny. :thumb: I think that people who dislike this tune aren't really getting it. (But then, I can't stand 'Heaven,' so different strokes for folks, I suppose).
