To those of you who have decided to potshots at *all* Americans and make unfair generalisations just about of what happened and what this wackjob Gus said - please do NOT lump all Americans together!! :mad: This whole thing probably bothers Canada-admiring American Hip fans even more so even more so than it's bothers you Canadians - because it's the Canada-admiring American Hip fans who are the ones that have to live with being hated on just bacause of what some idiots from the same country happen to do. People do not choose where to be born.

See, I'm giving you Canadians the benefit of the doubt. Now how about showing Americans the same respect. We are all human beings with the same desires, needs, feelings, dreams, and have you. Why does everything have to turn into a Canada vs US argument? Why can't we all just get along and accept one another as individuals?

Look, I am not saying all of this as an American - but, rather, as a human being!!

So why don't we all just accept the fact that both Canada and the US and every other nation in the world have their share of idiots and decent people. So how about we stop making unfair generalisations on nationalities just because of a few idiots from that country - and learn to accept everyone as individuals, okay?

If I had any choice in the matter as to what country to be born and raised up in, I would have picked Canada, so there!! :mad:

Also, one other thing, maybe I might even be able to sympathise with you guys who get annoyed with obnoxious Americans - if it wasn't for the fact that you guys were lumping all Americans into one category. In fact, these obnoxious Americans probably bug me even more so than it bugs you - since I'm the one who has to be surrounded by them everyday and live with being generalised against for what these idiots do. I would like to respond to this (with nothing negative, of course) but it's early and my brain hasn't warmed up yet. I have always felt that there should be no nations. I mean somewhere along the line, a very primitive us realized "strength in numbers" and tribes formed. Why we haven't yet been combined into a global tribe is beyond me.

I am not proud to be "Canadian," I am proud because of what my country stands for in terms of international diplomacy. Peacekeeping instead of policing, etc, etc. As long as there is patriotism, there will be terrorism. If there are some who love a country, there will be some who hate a country. Why is beyond me. We just have to watch out for those who take it to extremes.

I don't feel anything particular for Canada, like or dislike, but I do know I seem to have it better in Canada than those in some of the less fortunate countries. It's good that you posted this, aprilwino_1, some people don't think about what they say and don't think of the effects and, yeah... some people flat-out don't care.... I know I cringe everytime I bump into a stereotype on TV, be it national, sexual, or racial... It just seems by being proud of being different, yer being prejudice nowadays.

Sports is the epitome of this. Imagine the teams as nations (except not every one has an equal opportunity). People root for them and want them to win. Competition is a horrible thing. We're still fighting for meat in the jungle. Ha ha ha. What a metaphor that tunred out to be...

I don't even bother much at it anymore... I just treat everyone the same and ignore it when i see it. I used to care and I've done things to try and change it, but nobody cares anymore. Alot of us are hypocrits without knowing it... Anyway, just my little speech ... which seems to be the only thing that was ever free... our freedom of speech.

P.S. - I got two weeks worth of detentions after school for not standing up for "Oh Canada" when I was like 11 or something... :twisted: It shouldn't be enforced to honour your country....

You know what - lord brazle? I agree with you 100%!! I have felt this way for the longest time - but, unfortunately, it seems like most people don't understand. We probably do still need countries for organisational purposes - but I never really saw the reason to show pride in a nation. I mean, as I've said before, people do not choose the country to be born into - so it really makes no sense to show pride in it. Of course, we should all be grateful for the freedoms that we have and such - but patriotism, I never understood. People also do not choose who to be born to - so it also doesn't make sense to show pride in your heritage. And people most certainly don't choose whether to be born with a penis or not - so showing pride in your gender really don't make sense. Actually, this is also one of the reasons why I don't like sports - most people just root for their local team - so again, this whole arbitrary boundary issue. I also never went for this whole "school spirit" thing, either - I really don't understand why some teachers even encourage that. Again, this divides people up into groups.

P.S. I can sympathise with you on that last part. I have gotton into trouble on more than a few occassions for refusing to sing The Star Spangled Banner or saying the Pledge of Allegence. I agree, it really shouldn't be enforced to honour your country.

I'm proud to be an American but what that dipshit in Washington does not represent what I think.

For the most part, when someone insults my country I am very hurt because my Father, Grandfather and I have an ancestor whom all fought in wars for this country. They risked thier lives in the name of this country. Also, I think after 9/11 we all softened quite a bit and realized we weren't as tough as we thought we were. I think we're still kinda reeling from it.

We need to remember that hating one nation just because of what they THOUGHT we were about made the terrorists come and kill thousands of people that day, it was a generalization just because we were Americans. They didn't think about how we were all just humans, brothers, sisters, mothers, daughters, grandfathers, etc. How would they like it if we killed thier family?

I of course love Canada, always have, grew up close to it, traveled there many times, and my ancestors came from there, it's a great country and it doesn't matter to me who you are, people are humans, that's all that counts. Doesn't matter where you live or what god you pray to either.

There is one thing that Canada has on us, the fact that the constitution includes women, while our still says "all men are created equal". I've always thought that was awesome. There are many very cool things about America and Canada and it's like ANY group of people, be it a religion, a color, a sex, education level, etc, not everyone is like that group of people.

You don't all drink labatts and say 'eh' and watch hockey while wearing toques just as much as we don't all watch baseball, and say dude, drink budweiser and wear baseball caps.

We're all just humans and not everyone speaks for one group of people.

April, I can certainly understand your frustrations about people taking shots at Americans in the GD Anthem Thread, but the thing is, is that the whole thing was centered around American media, which, if memeory serves, you have spoken out against on at least one occassion. I agree that people need not make generalizations based upon nationality or anything else, but that's not necessarily what was being done in the thread. And as a disclaimer, this is not meant as an attack, just an idea.

These are kind of people that make me feel so embarrassed to live in this country. That's part of why I'm moving to Canada next month. Also, Jenna, to answer your question, it's not just here - sadly you run into too many American-bashing websites. I've been making it a point to stay away from them, lately - but I do still to be sensitive about it. However, I'm actually more disgusted by the American who give these people ammunition to create American-bashing websites - but I do still get hurt feelings when people make unfair generalisations like that.

Wendy, I'm not saying this to attack, or to be a bitch, but what I think people are getting at is that when they read your post, your mention of 9/11 sounding more like you were using it as a buzz phrase, rather than a legitimate argument. Being American, and being that some dear family friends lost a son in the WTC attacks, I, like many, many, many other people, am certainly sensetive to the attacks, the date, and the comments (good, bad or otherwise). I'm just not sure how 9/11 fits into the post, or the argument you're making...but that may just be me.
