thought this would be a good place to start a thread where people list some bands others may not know about ..i'll start..
ween..at first, people write them off as juvenile and a "joke band"..look further and you'll discover brilliance
gomez...greatest use of 3 singers in the same band EVER...bluesy,rocking,soft and the dreaded (much over used-term but appropriate here...) ECCLECTIC
morphine...losing mark sandman was a tragedy to music that went mostly unnoticed...bass...drums..vocals..sax...sexy....

Ween. A co-worker told me how brilliant they were and gave me a copy of one of their cd's, "Quebec" possibly being the name. I don't know what to think. I thought they were a joke, one or two of the songs I heard were all right (heavier sounding) but I'm still not into them. Don't think I'll ever buy one of their albums.
Most Canadians probably know of the Trews but may not have seen them live. They've been called, for a lack of a better comparison, "the next Hip" mostly because of their rock mixed with some bluesy sounds and their scintillating live performances. Granted, I only saw about four of Sam Robert's songs before the lightning hit but I thought the Trews were a notch above Sam and the boys as far as the live show. (The Trews opened for Sam)
The Trews are going to be hitting the university circuit again in the fall and are coming back to play PEI again in September. Their live reputation is growing and they're still only in their early twenties. Listening to them live and on cd, there is almost no comparison, much like the Hip. If I never heard them live, I'd probably dismiss them as being an average Can Rock band but they've got something.

Yes, the Trews are great. Gordie Johnson from Big Sugar produced their album, and it's amazing. Plus they are a very solid live band who put on an awesome show. Their lead guitar player is sickeningly good.

I have no idea how wellknown they are in Canada and America, but I really like Buffalo Tom.
For the bluesfans; try Omar and the Howlers. Omar (Kent Dykes) has an unbelievable voice.

please don't base your opinion on quebec..not the best album..i would listen to "the mollusk" or even the new live cd they've just released..then, if you still don't like them...well...i'm sorry for wasting your time!! :oops:

Ween is awesome! I got hooked on them from a friend in '96. I first heard the country album on a car trip to North Carolina. The Mollosk and Chocolate and Cheese are great albums also. I've seen them play in Toronto (the Kool hause or whatever it is now called) about 4 times and 3 times in Buffalo.

Any suggested Ween tracks that are good examples of what Ween sounds like? There seems to be a lot of support for them here.
I'm really into Spoon, Thursday and the New Amsterdams right now (none of them are similar to the Hip... but they're cool). I also saw Pedro the Lion at the Horseshoe last month... cool show.

Well I don't know if anyone will like this band. I just picked up The Killers. It's quite a good album. Very Echo and the bunnymen sounding. I still can't believe they are from Vegas. I would have swore they where from England somewhere.

Tenacious D or "The D" is awesome!!
JB and KG tear it up, anything they write sounds cool!!
Their CD is a riot from start to finish...Tribute, Wonder Boy, Kielbasa, etc..
It also pains me to know that they have a live DVD out BEFORE the Hip, it is called "The Complete Master Works"...good stuff
