Downie admits the issue of downloading is an extremely grey area.
"On the one hand, I like the fact people are exercising the music-listening muscle," he says. "But for musicians, we take a loan from the record company to make a record on the scale we need to make it on. We put a lot of time and effort into it."

The promotion worked too well. In the five weeks following its broadcast, there were more than 2.8 million attempts to illegally download the single from the Internet. In May, the Canadian Recording Industry Association used the Hip's numbers to speak out against piracy -- which prompted some of the band's fans to denounce the group on www.hipbase.com.

Wasn't it the Much Music I&I where the guy asked him if the band would support a fan-based initiative to stop illegal downloading of Hip songs and Gordie replied something along the lines of: "Its only music"?

I love that quote
"I've got a fever," says Baker. "And it calls for more cowbell."
My friends and I have been using that quote for a couple of years, but no one ever knew what we were talking about. It is a great skit off of SNL.
If you are interested punch in "Don't fear the reaper" and search for videos in Kazaa, sure to make you laugh!

Wha?
I don't recall anyone denouncing the group. I think all denouncing was directed towards Universal for using the Hip as the basis for their propaganda.

I notice that that article didn't mention anything about non-Canadian Hip fans.
