How did you get hooked?
#1

Here's a thought for all of ya...

When/where/how did you discover The Hip?

I remember being about 8 or 9 and hearing Courage on the radio. I was living in Newfoundland at the time, so my exposure to music was pretty limited. I just couldn't get enough of that song, and I still can't! It's all about the rock of The Rock, OZ-FM.

The rest, as they say, is history.

I thought you might find this thread interesting. It's got three pages of how-I-got-started-with-the-Hip stories.

Thanks a lot for that! I haven't really explored too many of the older threads yet, so this is a great help.

I always had been a casual fan of the hip. I grew up close to the NY/Quebec border so I was a New York country girl who grew up watching lots of Canadian TV and listening to lots of Canadian Radio. I have a few MP3's I DLed back in the early napster days, back when it was "OK" to download music.

I never really got into them as much as I am now till I dated a guy who was totally into The Hip. Just this past summer I was reintroduced to a song I had forgotten about called "Bobcaygeon". He also played many of the songs I remember playing on the radio when I was young. He also had a few burned CDs of thier live shows and told me about what kind of guy Gord Downie was, he's seen them live. It was like a "They do all of those great songs I've heard before?" moment. Also Gord's lyrics were so amazing and he seemed like my kind of guy. It all came together right then and there.

After I parted ways with that guy, I went to thehip.com and I listened to IVL. I bought IVL this past January and I listen to Launch to hear the other stuff I don't have or haven't heard. I've heard about 50% of all of thier songs, can't wait to buy all of the albums and hear EVERY SINGLE SONG.

...it all started on one of those journeys we all embark on from time to time, known as 'roadtrips'. me and a few pals were just heading back from an absolutely epic bob dylan concert in Bend, Oregon.
we were all still high off the ambience of bobs concert, when my friend(for whom i now love and thank to this day) put on Road Apples for the drive back home. it was the first i'd heard of the album, in fact all i knew of The Hip was 'ahead by a century', so i kind of falsely epitomized them in my mind through that song.
well, my friends, a revelation occurred then and there. goosebumps resonated throughout my body. i experienced a beautiful paroxysm, a 'thoe of passion', more elegantly stated. ever since, well, its been all Hip.
All of this sound hoaky? im sure it does, but thats entirely expected. you may relate, but never fully understand. i just had to get it off my chest.
i am now 19, own every single album, and am dying in anticipation for there new album and ensuing tour.

KooooooooooLLLLLLLLLL

I will not give up. My face is set,my gait is fast,my goal is heaven,my road is narrow,my way is rough,my companions are few,my guide is reliable,my mission is clear. I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, diluted or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity,or meander in the maze of mediocrity. I will not give up,shut up or slow down....Blessed Be!

Ya know what? I just hafta say something. I just recently found this Hip forum. I'm new to the PC world and I could tell my Hip story and I could rant and rave about when I first heard the Hip and fell in love, I could tell you how I grew up with and along with the hip and I could tell how no one could possibly understand what an uneducated 29yo male like myself has learned about music and words from the Hip.I could boast about my amazing adventures following the Hip around. I could tell you about the drugs I've done I could tell you how wide open my mind has become. I could tell you how I've come to question everything I've been told. I could tell you how we are all brainwashed from a young age and how I accept the way certain things make me feel. But I'll just say this I'm so glad I found you all.No joke I thought it was just me who felt this way and I thought I was just weird now I take comfort in knowing it is true! We all think differerntly than the average Susan(no offense Susie) LOVE YA ALL
