When talking singles I think it's reasonable to allow some video influence to creep in as well. As anyone who was a teenager at some point during the 1990's can attest, MuchMusic played a huge role in the impact of singles. I believe a big factor in Courage hitting bigger than anything else on FC is the fantastic video. That clip was in high rotation on Much (might even have won an MMVA award that year?) in 1993. It captures the idiosyncratic dancing of the "bed-head" Gordie that defines the peak of my idol worship. He's got his eyes closed 95% of the video and yet you can't take your eyes off him. Absolutely riveting.

I remember the video for Locked getting lots of airplay on Much as well. After that album came out, the Hip were the biggest thing going. I remember camping out for tickets for their show at Max Bell Arena in Calgary on the '92 FC tour, and people were absolutely jacked for that gig. Seemed like every kid in my high school wanted to go, and a lot of them did, as evidenced by all the new Hip shirts worn to school the next day.
The show itself was a revelation. One of the craziest mosh pits I'd ever experienced with crowd surfers flying everywhere, kids passing out from the heat, and security guys constantly pulling people over the barrier so they wouldn't get crushed up front. Not to mention the giant hazy blanket of marijuana smoke that hovered above the crowd for the entire show. It was glorious. I remember seeing Pearl Jam and Soundgarden at the same venue in '93 and '94, and the crowds weren't nearly as rabid for those shows. With that album and tour, the Hip really tapped into something and Canada's youth just went bonkers for them.

Yes, it's been overplayed to shit and I can't even listen to it anymore, but that isn't because of its weakness; that's because of its incandescent power.
