I’ve also been thinking of this round in the context of how the single worked as a representation or introduction to the rest of the album. To me Poets does an incredible job of capturing the sound and the vibe of phantom power - it also came on the heels of three monster albums showing the band had plenty left in the tank.

Maybe it's time to re-examine what we are actually voting for in this poll. I've not moved myself out of the 'best song' lane that I've been traveling in for the previous polls. Best song for me in this poll is still 'Locked'. However, this IS a 'singles' poll and while great single and great song have a lot of common ground, there are differences. Keiffer points out a good one.
Single-wise ABAC is their greatest and most important, hands-down. If you are at a social gathering and someone says to you "The Tragically Hip? Don't know them. What do they sing?", you are going to go with ABAC every time. It has had the most pop culture impact, it was the right choice to lead-off TATH, and it rescued the Hip commercially. DFN sold very well but those numbers were significantly front-loaded and propped up by the FC afterglow. ABAC brought back the "lay listener" after they found DFN had nothing for them. Without ABAC, both TATH and Phantom Power would have found a smaller audiences and the Hip would have fallen off the Can-Rock peak in 1996 rather than in 2000.

All good points. ABAC definitely had more impact than the other songs on this list, as far as radio singles go.
