The Weakest Link - Man Machine Poem - Round 2
#1

With a tie between Man and Tired as Fuck, they will continue to round 2 with only Hot Mic being eliminated in Round 1.

Eliminated Round 1
Hot Mic

Vote for the song you believe to be the weakest on Man Machine Poem and after 48 hours, we will remove the two songs that have the most votes. As before, a song must have at least 10% of the vote in order to be removed otherwise it will carry forward into the following round.

The poll will end Saturday at 9:15am Eastern.

Happy voting!

Really?!??! Hot Mic is a weaker song than Man? Somebody is meddling with the votes -- I assume Don, the Tyrant.

Oh well, makes voting this round a lot easier. Vote Man.

"Man" is...OK. I love the fact that they were allowing a bit of sonic experimentation to peek through. Love the bizarre vocal distortion at the start and how it's revisited at the end. My problem with the cut is just that it's too much of a reprise of the great lick from 'Machine' (don't like such repetition on an album) and - worse - that the track just goes on for too damned long. Trim a minute off there and you've got a pleasant bit of weirdness that does us the courtesy of departing before it gets boring. As it is, it gets boring.

Gord D. was also quite wrong in insisting on the sequencing that puts "Man" at the front of the record. Rope the listener in with a one-two punch (Machine + Possessed) before getting self-indulgent. Baker was dead right on that.

I'm a bit frustrated that nobody seems able to hear the merits of "Tired as F*ck." It's a poignant, beautiful little track, where the band/singer are all completely locked in as an organic unity. As I noted before, I really think it's being punished for being selected as a single, and therefore disappointing people (since it's not a single).

"Great Soul" is a total skipper and I dearly hope it's purged this round.

Second Round in a row that it appears I'm the only one voting for the song in my cross-hairs.

For the most part during these polls I've found that once the dead weight was gone after the first round what we were left with was a tighter and stronger album. I don't feel that way with this album, and not just because I'm a Hot Mic fan. There aren't really any tracks on this album whose elimination would result in a better album. Granted, that may be a function of it being short in duration to begin with. M

Man and Great Soul are the two weakest remaining songs.

I agree with this. One small caveat for me... I love the noise effect of the machine "shutting down" at the end of the album. It is the sound of things winding down and wouldn't feel quite as right for the first song of the album. It makes for a nice coda in that respect, but overall I agree that Machine should have been the lead off track.

That's a great point. I too love the "machine winding down" sound...a perfect way to end the album and (poignantly) also a perfect sound for the conclusion of the Hip's career - powering down the machine.

But like you, potsie, I don't think that in itself justifies the sequencing decision. Heck, you could have added that "powering down" sound to the end of "Man" too, if you really wanted to conclude the album with it.

I'm shocked people don't like TAF. I guess I better read the other thread to figure out why.

I don’t get it either, I think TAF a great song! I don’t know if its the song title itself, or if it’s KWTs reasoning or what??

I don't dislike TAF, it's a fun palate cleanser, but it would've gotten one of my first four votes just because I like the other songs more.

Possessed, right? That's so you to vote for the single as the weakest song.

On other albums, no.
On this album, yes.

You people voting for World Possessed and What Blue should be ashamed of yourselves. Those are easily two of the best songs on the album, and can hold their own against anything from the back catalogue.

Seriously, who votes for Possessed? It's far and away one of the best songs on the album.
