I like Lookahead, but it should not be in the final four and probably only made it here because it was a single. So out it goes.

I think my final favourite will be Goodnight Attawapiskat, but only by a hair over At Transformation.
We Want To Be It though is just not even close to the other remaining three.

A couple of thoughts on the soon-to-be-expelled 'Lookahead:'
1. Brevity is the soul of wit. Despite its sad subject matter, it's very much a pop construction (verse-pre-chorus-chorus, etc.) with a nice melody - but I often think that if it stuck around even a few seconds longer, it would tire the listener's ear. The song ends EXACTLY when it should, not a second too soon. Good on the band for recognizing the value of a three-minute wonder (or however long it is).
2. The song's impact is weirdly diluted by some odd rhythmic decisions. The pre-chorus - it's a power, a power, a power, etc. - has Gord sensibly coming down hard on the POW syllable, but Fay's drums perversely do the opposite, emphasizing the next beat. This might make sense conceptually (?), but the effect is oddly unsatisfying, like singer and drummer are pulling in different directions. I want the entire band to be coming down hard on the POW.
Relatedly, in the crucial final line of the chorus, Gord sings
Gmmmeee...the lookAAAA-head
and once again this weirdly disguises the hook. If you didn't know the song title you'd be straining to make out the words. Whereas
Gimme...the LOOK...AAAAH-head
would surely have been how the Gord of 1993 would have dealt it out, delivering maximum "oomph" where it counts most. This subversion of the hook actually has more in common with the frustrating rhythmic games "Screamo Gord" was playing on the tour than does the emoting of "Man Machine Poem," IMHO. The song works, on the whole - I find myself singing it a lot to myself - but these decisions always leave me feeling that it could have been recorded for greater impact.

The final four that is left is the same as my final four, so I can't complain. I really like Lookahead though and have it as my #2, which is admittedly higher than most here. There's some heavy topics laced throughout NFPA, but there's something about this song that finds the right balance of contrast between hope and despair. Even though it's about the 'no good times' spend in a hospital, the melody is pleasing and I think focus is on the optimism about eventually being able to look to the future when everything will be all right.
Anyways, cheers to you, Lookahead.

The Lookahead will deserve its fate this round, but it won't be because of me. It is the song I will always listen to on this album.
