Seeing these results unfold has been an interesting exercise. I was surprised to see support for Yawning on here and the DFN insight thread. Not that I think it is a bad song - it just never has been one that has stood out to me compared to others on this album, so I've been curious to see that isn't the case for others here.

'Thugs' is a really good song. One of Gord's best vocals, too, and the band is so in sync with that groove. The what-the-hell falsetto part is so much fun. Nonetheless I voted it off the island. 'Yawning or Snarling' is more complex and evocative to my ear. And there's no WAY 'Thugs' is better than any of the others.
For all my grumbling about the results of these surveys, the current list of survivors is - with the glaring, inexcusable exception of the mighty 'Titanic Terrarium' - quite a reasonable distillation of the best stuff on that album. So, good work, Hipbase. :thumb:
(Incidentally, is there another album on which so many songs are clearly built off GS's incredible bass lines? They're like the throbbing heart of the whole record).

DFN is peak Sinclair. Thugs, Yawning and Grace all occupy a place in "Sinclair's All-time Bass Top Ten". I don't think any other album can place two there.
I love Thugs, but I found myself on Hip Museum today and learned for the first time that my favourite line from the song ("Everyone's got their breaking point With me it's spiders and with you it's me") was not written by Downie. It was pulled directly from a movie, so, based on this weak reasoning, I gave Thugs my vote today.

GS basslines are on every album, just mixed differently and more entangled with Johnny, whereas on DFN they are fully visible for the greatness they are. Besides GD, none of the boys get the kudus they deserve as players and songwriters, but GS seems especially underrated.
