On what was already a shit Monday with the news from Vegas, this was devastating to hear.
I've spent countless hours listening to Petty, starting with Full Moon Fever in '89 and then working backwards. One of my all-time favourite concerts is seeing Petty at Bonnaroo in 2006. There was an 80,000 strong "Petty" chant going in the minutes prior to his arrival stage that was amazing. "Can I jam for you?" he said, and the place went crazy. At one point he brought out Stevie Nicks and said,"I told you that you were going to have fun, didn't I?" Stevie and Tom did a version of "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" that was spine tingling and she then hung around for "Need to Know", "American Girl" and a few others. It was an unbelievable night of music.
Gonna listen to Wildflowers tonight. RIP Tom.

as a 40 yr old American. i can honestly say i don't remember a day without Petty. Anytime i played in a band, we would cover one of his songs. I always felt that it was impossible to hate Tom Petty. that everyone knew and loved him. he transcended to all audiences.

I loved that man
I will not give up. My face is set,my gait is fast,my goal is heaven,my road is narrow,my way is rough,my companions are few,my guide is reliable,my mission is clear. I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, diluted or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity,or meander in the maze of mediocrity. I will not give up,shut up or slow down....Blessed Be!
