Why did the band split with Jake Gold? If I recall, this occurred between M@W and IVL, or between IVL and IBE. The Hip were super innovative with the web mid-late 90's and always seemed on the cutting edge of marketing and being accessible to fans. I remember what a debacle the rollout for the IBE tour was (fans were super frustrated how long it took to announce dates) and I think The Hip hooked up with their current manangement around World Container. With the current management, I remember reading during the Fully Completely tour there was a conscious decision to market The Hip as a legacy act which I found annoying as they were still capable of releasing records that pushed their limits. This maybe explained the hits-heavy shows during the Rob Baker setlists era.

Very interesting video. Thanks for sharing. I get the sense from this segment that Gold and Gregg didn't truly know what they were doing at the time and that they were just figuring it out as they went along. I wonder if their relative inexperience had any bearing on the Hip not cracking the US market? Maybe in the hands of a more experienced management team things might have turned out differently. Or maybe, as the band has suggested, they got the success they deserved; no more, no less.
As an aside, I smiled when the camera panned across the racks at A&A Records showing that Blue Rodeo's Diamond Mine was at number 2 on the shop's charts, sandwiched in between the Fine Young Cannibals and Madonna. I guess I had forgotten that BR already had two successful albums under their belt before the Hip had their first (UTH).
