City council — following suggestions from the public — has decided to have a commemorative stone in Springer Market Square where more than 25,000 gathered to watch a live stream of the band's Aug. 20 concert.

City officials say they consulted the band and the lyric options are "everybody was in it from miles around" from Blow at High Dough and "We danced the sidewalk clean" from New Orleans is Sinking.

Along with the chosen lyrics will be the words "The Tragically Hip, A National Celebration, August 20, 2016."

I think they are decent choices to reflect the show and the event in Kingston. "No dress rehearsal, this is our life" might have been another good one. "Watch the band, through a bunch of dancers..." too.

The close with Ahead by a Century was special. It felt like a tribute to Gord to me. I wonder if Gord picked it ? Feels like he did to me.

I, too, would choose none of the above. Put a gun to my head and I'd choose "everybody was in it from miles around" because that is a far truer statement than the sidewalks being danced clean.

To me, this reeks of typical government squandering tax dollars for a photo op to strike while the iron is hot, with a dose of very little thought being put into it. It would surely be comical how much money and time they are spending on this vote, the stone, and the marketing of everything surrounded it.

Hmmm, lets pick a lyric from a song whos title pays homage to another place in another country OR a lyric from a song where Gord purposefully sings "some kinda elvis thing" instead of 'in my hometown' (I fully admit I was hoping to hear this lyric/crowd reaction in Kingston after botched Bobcaygeon "That night in Toronto" @ acc)

Must admit that I due love the coincidence that both songs to be voted on have an Elvis tie in.

They have already renamed a street after the Hip, and they have honorary degrees from Queen's. But now, they are FINALLY getting a long overdue ENGRAVED STONE!!

If the city wanted to commemorate Kingstons event of the century, take their time and do it right. There have to be far better ways than an engraved stone, I'd even volunteer to help.

This effort feels half assed to me.

I would have done a statue sort of like you see in front of MLB ballparks. On the statue you could also engrave the song quote if you would see fit. It would mean more in the grander scheme of things.
