For all those girls out there for whom it's Mother's Day, Happy September 17!
Obviously, the subject matter of this song is incredibly sad, but is there a more evocative lyric than "His tiny knotted heart / Well, I guess it never worked too good / The timbers tore apart / And the water gorged the wood."

I agree that the song is incredibly sad but, if it was possible, it became an even more melancholy affair for me when I read this interpretation of "balloons are filled with rain" on Hip Musueum:
"Maybe a simple reference to the dark clouds associated with such tragedy, but Hip Head Sam Fitzpatrick adds: "balloons are filled with rain," I've always assumed, is about an IV in the hospital. When I hear that I see the young lad looking up from his hospital bed and seeing an IV perhaps and in his innocence sees it as a balloon filled with rain. That's all I will say about that cause it honestly breaks my heart."
There are not many images sadder than that of a young child in a hospital bed hooked up to an IV.
Wow, I'm getting myself down while writing this. Gotta lighten the mood by listening to In View...

Wow, loved that line and always thought of it as incredibly sad, but never thought of it as an IV.
Drip, drip, drip -- raining venom -- balloons are filled with rain.
