Sarah Harmer summing up so much so well, when she talks about her appreciation for the depth & breadth of the Hip catalogue: "I feel like I’ll still be getting to know it for quite a while. There’s going to be an enduring reveal. It’s weird now, because to put a finite stamp on it changes your perceptions of everything."

I like these quotes in particular:

"The brilliance of the band and their legacy is that they were able to transform what everybody thought of them into something nobody thought of them. That’s beautiful. It’s beautiful that you have people who would buy Black Crowes records or whatever, they would come into the Hip via the mainstream but the next thing you know they’d be on this dark waterslide going off-river. The Hip would show them things and play them things they’d never heard before."

"The interplay between the two guitars is sublime. I love the part in Harmer's interview, where she is speaking of the interesting phenomenon of an audience shouting out lyrics to songs likely without fully grasping the real message being conveyed. I am very guilty of this - I've never really been a 'lyrics' guy, I'm much more into the melody and interplay of different sounds coming together in a song. I can recite the lyrics to most Hip songs, but have little knowledge (or care) to what they actually mean. Drives my wife crazy, to be honest...

Downie’s lyrics are one thing to experience on a record, but to hear 30,000 people sing that third verse of “Courage,” the passage he lifts from Hugh MacLennan, is incredibly powerful—and unusual, to hear how this deeply philosophical statement really strikes people.

A. Yeah, and melody really strikes people, too. No offence to Hugh MacLennan, but you don’t even have to know or understand any deep philosophy that’s being espoused, you can just have the feeling of those words together, and that you know them and can sing along with that melody with your fist up in the air. It’s a wild vehicle for sentiment, because it’s so powerful on the musical front. But maybe I’m not giving people in the audience enough credit for actually thinking about what they’re singing, but it’s awesome when a rock’n’roll groove and melody can transport something from Barometer Rising or whatever [ed: it’s from 1958’s The Watch That Ends the Night] into [Toronto’s] Molson Ampitheatre and have people just owning it.

These have been great interviews -- I've meant to check news stands to see if there's a print version. I get a real sense of finality in many of these comments from those who have been close with the band at various times.

I recently read that Midnight Oil have a new album and are planning to tour North America in 2017. Like the Hip...they are amazingly powerful live. I'm lucky to have seen them several times... Hope this tour happens!!!

The tour is definitely happening, as it's been officially confirmed by the band. I haven't heard anything about a new album yet, but that would be amazing. Peter Garrett just put out a solo album. Is that the one you're thinking of?

I dig what I've heard off the new PG album (the single is great!). I read recently read they are or maybe plan to go into the studio soon. I'd take a tour without an album but it would be great to have a new one for them to tour on. What an awesome band. I need to pick up the PG solo album asap.
