Say it, brother!
The song's chorus is terrific, catchy stuff - marred, IMHO, by the reverb irritatingly applied to the backing vocals, which makes the overall sound muddier than it should be. Another blemish, I feel, is that Gord refuses just to hold the note ('daaaaark'), which would be much more satisfying, and instead keeps f**king with it.
The song has a great coda...tonally very different from the catchy chorus. This tonal ambiguity (which also marks the shift from chorus to instrumental break) may be a lingering echo of what Rob baker talked about in that Sirius interview, where he said the producers were arguing among themselves over whether this song needed to be cranked into up-tempo overdrive, or to be given a spacier, atmospheric treatment. The issue is never completely resolved. That said, this complexity suits the lyrical sentiments (which oscillate between gloom and hope), although it does deprive us of what might otherwise be a classic, straight-ahead, toe-tapping Hip anthem.
Incidentally: "Me, I'm as happy as my least happy kid" is a frigging fantastic line. Killer Downie. :thumb:
