Midnight Oil Reunion
#1

Best news I've heard all week! A full Canadian tour is probably not likely, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they'll at least hit Vancouver. Details here:

In related news, Peter Garrett's debut solo album is coming out this July. First single sounds great. Very Midnight Oil-esque of course, but there's a bit of the Clash in there as well. I like it.

Fuck yes! Midnight Oil's the only band I've seen come close to upstaging the Hip at a festival show — Another Roadside Attraction.

Roadside '93 in Calgary was one of the greatest rock shows I've ever witnessed. I remember being so blown away by the Oils performance, I had doubts about whether the Hip could top it.

Peter Garrett's new solo album has officially dropped, and it's pretty damn great. Such a pleasure hearing this guy sing and perform again. Currently only the digital version is available in Canada, however you can still order the vinyl and CD through his website, provided you're not bothered by the insane international shipping costs.

Tour dates announced today. 52 shows around the world starting in South America in April and ending in their hometown of Sydney in November. Only 2 Canadian dates unfortunately (Toronto, Vancouver). I'll be trying for the Vancouver presale tomorrow morning. My last two attempts at concert tickets ended in heartbreak and frustration due to resale sites/bots, etc.. but I'm still gonna try. Wish me luck everyone!

They're also releasing vinyl/CD box sets of all their albums, plus a rarities CD. Looks amazing.

I've been well aware of Midnight Oil since "Beds are Burning" was all over the radio in 87/88 but I've never delved into their music. I'm only familiar with a few tunes like "The Dead Heart" and "Blue Sky Mine", both of which I really enjoy. Can you make a recommendation for a couple of albums that would be a good starting point to jump into their music? Good luck getting tickets!

If you're looking for a good cross-section of their entire career, I'd recommend their recent greatest hits album, Essential Oils. It's 2 discs, so there's a lot of music on there to sift through.

If greatest hits albums aren't your thing, then I'd recommend starting with their most well known albums: Diesel & Dust, Blue Sky Mining, or my personal favorite, 1993's Earth & Sun & Moon. Their last album, Capricornia (2002) is also quite good. Then work your way backwards.

So am I the only Oils fan here? This is a pretty lonely thread, haha. They just announced that they're expanding the Canadian leg of their tour with Matt Good as the opener. Here are the dates for anyone who cares. If you've never seen these guys, I highly recommend checking them out. Easily one of the best live bands you'll ever see. Trust me.

That will be a great double bill with Matt as opener -- Bones was his bass player on the Chaotic Neutral tour, so there's a connection and appreciation.

I was never a big Oil fan, but they were great during those ARA shows.

Incredible show in Vancouver last night. The band absolutely killed it. It's amazing how many of their political songs are still totally relevant today in light of all the crazy shit that's been going on in the world lately. Thank god they're back.

Some good clips from last night:
