Gord Downie - Newfoundland
#1

Anyone else going?

Newfoundland Folk Festival

Writers at Woody Point

Great excuse to go back to Nfld for a week - haven't made it to Gros Morne before, so really looking forward to that.

My friend was there and managed to end up right at the front! She sent me this picture and I am jealous:

Just got back from the show at Writer's in Woody Point. Didn't get a setlist but jotted one down. Great show, super intimate and he had lots of energy even though he was stuck behind a guitar.

"The Rock" is the name of the first song in The Depression Suite.

It was pretty damn awesome that's for sure.

I saw him in St. John's at the Folk Fest on Saturday night and was blown away by how great he sounded. The set list for that show was pretty much the same as above.

Woody Point though was amazing. First of all, what a f'ing beautiful place. We woke up to awesome sunrises just outside our door every morning! The atmosphere there was so chill. We kept running into Gord and his kids on the street!

The theatre itself was gorgeous and intimate. Before Gord's set, his wife came out and did a performance. She read her poetry and had a cellist accompanying her. One of her poems was about her breast cancer - so incredibly moving.

Then Gord came on. I have to say, this is the best I've ever heard him sound. He was passionate, energetic, and intense all at once. Lots of talking, joking and laughing. It was pretty incredible to be a part of this.

I actually didn't have a ticket for the second night as they were already sold out when I called back in May, but they kept saying that some might be available at the door. Knowing that they kept the door open all night anyway, I thought I'd just stand there if I didn't get in. Seats became available though, so my friend and I got in. Just like the previous night, this show was just as good, if not better. Set list was the same, different order, and there were 5 songs in the encore.

Tomorrow, Gord is supposed to be co-leading a walk with Joseph Boyden. I was really bummed to have to leave - that would have been cool.

This is Bobcaygeon, but what I really love is the last two minutes of the video when he performs "Who By Rote"

His voice sounds really strong in these clips. He's singing in key, and his tone is excellent. He sounded good in Calgary as well when he was here with the Sadies last month. Hopefully this a sign of things to come when he reconvenes with the Hip.

I went on that walk Gord did with Joseph Boyden as well. It was quite incredible. He and Josh played completely acoustic in a huge field with the mountains in the background. We were out there in the "long grass" as Gord would say. They played:

Dance and it's Disappearance
Bobcaygeon
Yellow Days
Chancellor

I have pictures and a video of Bobcaygeon I can put up later.
