Ottawa
#1

Hey everyone! Looks like I may be headed to Ottawa this September. Was wondering if there are any Basers in the city who have some local advice! Where to live? What to do? Is it cheaper to live in Gatineau? Do weekly Hip concerts in Ontario still happen ... ?

I lived in Ottawa for 3 years when I was taking journalism at Algonquin College. Cool city. I lived in Nepean, which is right near the college. I don't remember the cost of living being overly expensive, however that was almost 15 years ago, so I'm sure things have changed since then. If you own a bike, it's a great city for cycling. Skating on the Canal in the winter is a must, and the Byward Market is a great spot for eating, bar hopping, shopping, etc... and of course the annual Ottawa Blues Fest is probably one of the best music festivals I've ever been to with shows happening all over the city.

If you're looking for a cheap place to eat, I highly recommend the Elgin Street Diner. Best poutine in the city hands down. Also, the Manx Pub right next door is a cool spot to hang out and throw back a couple of pints. Ottawa has a pretty decent live music scene as well. Not sure which clubs are still around, but I used to frequent Zaphod's and Babylon quite a bit. Also, I recommend checking out the Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield, Quebec. (about a 25 min. drive from Ottawa). Amazing venue. I saw Ron Sexsmith, Ron Hawkins (Lowest of the Low), and Chris Brown & Kate Fenner at that place.

It's cheaper to live in Gatineau, but from what i hear it's almost made up for at tax time.

Are you looking to rent, or buy? If you want to buy, they are building new houses like crazy all over the freakin' city. I live in the burbs (Barrhaven) and like it. I suppose it all depends on where you are going to work though.

I'm sure folks that live in Orleans, but work in Kanata, have horror stories of hour plus commutes every day.......

Now that I've finally remembered that this site exists, I can chime in and say I live in the burbs of Ottawa (Barrhaven). I work downtown though, and am always game for a bite or a pint.

If you're not sure who he is, just look for the guy in the ugly sweater and short shorts.
