The Watchmen at the Horseshoe Tavern - Quick Review
#1

Great show last night at the 'Shoe...

The show opened with "Any Day Now" and closed with just Joey Serlin and Danny Greaves on stage doing Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" to close out the second encore...a fitting way to go out...

In between, there was 90 minutes of the band laying it all out, despite Danny's fighting a flu bug...Lots of old stuff mixed in with the newer material from Slomotion (which takes on a life of it's own live), with personal highlights being "Run & Hide", "Calm", "Come Around", the audience participation in "All Uncovered" and Danny's rendition of Billy Bragg's "Between the Wars"...

All in all, it was exactly what I expected - a great night of tunes covering the band's 12 years...

Thanks Guys!

Now it's up to the Hip to fill yet another Can-con musical void... :thumb:

Maybe I've been spoiled by seeing a bunch of great live performances in the last few months (Edgefest, Sam Roberts, Guster, Howie Day), but the Saturday show at The Shoe left me feeling a wee bit disappointed. The guys on stage looked tired, and the crowd was average at best. (Yes the sing-a-long was good, but that was it.)

When they opened for The Hip last summer at the Amphitheatre they had way more energy, playing to a half-full venue, to fans who were mainly there to see someone else.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I was there, but maybe they realize that their time has come.

I'm still trying to find the info for the Ottawa show...I can't get anyone at the venue, it's way too early. All I want to know is can you get tickets at the venue in the evening or are they ONLY available at ticketmaster??? Nothing I have seen so far gives an at-the-door price. Calling ticketmaster will do no good because they'll just tell me they are the only ones selling them because they want their 35% service fee.

$5.50 service fees on a $15 ticket! Can you believe that?!

I wasn't trying to put anyone down, because I was also there, as an "average fan"; but the show was just another show.

I think it's all relative...I know I had somewhat lofty expectations about what they would bring to the table Saturday night, and I will admit, I was somewhat disappointed when the lights came up at 1:30am, moreso for what they didn't play (In My Mind, I'm Still Gone, Cracked) than anything else...

Still, it was clear right from the start that Danny wasn't on his game; if memory serves, it was during the second song of the night (morning?) he commented he was "running on fumes", and made numerous references to the flu bug...

Taking that into consideration, while it may not have been a "blow the doors off" finale, it was what it was - a great Canadian band saying goodbye on THEIR terms...and I was just glad to be part of it...

I'm looking forward to hearing how the bootleg sounds...

Jen, sorry I missed ya! My brother and I were standing about just behind the dancefloor by the first pillar all night (we arrived around 8:00 and had a couple of pints at the bar before the doors opened) - for what it's worth, my ears were still ringing well into Sunday from THAT location, so I can't imagine how loud it would have been right beside the speakers...
