Tragically Hip on Saturday Night Live (1995)
#1

Just noticed that the Nautical and Grace Too SNL performances have been removed from youtube by NBC... Managed to save/download the Nautical video a few months back, but for some reason I missed saving the Grace Too video. Does anyone happen to have the Grace Too vid saved and willing to share/upload, or know where I can find the video? I've searched but can't find another upload source.

Not at home right now so I can't promise but I believe I have the vid.

Shoot me a PM with your email address and I'll send you a DL link this evening.

Had it on my channel several years ago but it was removed less than a week after I posted it. Surprised the others stayed up so long.

Ya know what!? It always pisses me off when the people who love Gord and his unique person...who he is, the way he acts, what he does, what he says.....always say stupid stuff like "he looked so drunk or high". Really?? Then how do you explain who he is and what he does the rest of the time? You so cheaped who he is. I'm not saying the guy hasn't (or doesn't) experience mind altering experiences, but come on really? It's like suggesting that Rob Baker wears hair extensions and that all that long loveliness is not his! Ha! Don't you just love how awesome Gord is all the time? If I am correct, the story goes that when he puts his two index fingers together at the start of Grace, Too he is giving a signal to a nephew who is celebrating his 11th birthday. "Hey nephew, I'm so F'ing high!!!!! And happy B Day". Dan Akroid who so proudly introduced the band from his hometown, would certainly not be proud to have introduced less than a first rate product. HE didn't fight to get a "firework" of a band onto the show. The Hip are stars and are the real deal...not emulating anybody or anything.

Ya know what I love!!!??? He is just Gordon Downie. He is part of a band that by that point in it's existence was playing intelligent....no, BRILLIANT music and had (has) and incredibly dyamic front man.

How would you explain from 0:00 to 9:33 of this?

That's the hardest workin band is the business baby!
If you were just joking around Darkest One, sorry for my rant. I figured that a member with 4199 posts wouldn't have that opinion. I'm on here often, but don't post much.

Thank you music lovers!

Yeah. No offense to TDC...I'm sure he meant nothing by it. But it frustrates me when people act as if what would make The Hip awesome is being stuck in some perpetual state of adolescence.

I remember thinking Gord looked mighty whacked on SNL too... At that time I thought he was baked for sue (and he may have been, who knows), but as anyone who has seen this band numerous times knows, Gord is just Gord, living in the moment on stage, following his muse. That's what makes him so great!

I'm sorry if the truth hurts, but it was 1995, in NYC, and i'm pretty sure he was bein' a bad boy that day. Not like i'd be one to cast stones or point fingers for that sort of behaviour, it's just what sticks out most in my mind about their snl performances. I don't see any need to defend the band, or condemn my post, as it was merely an observation. Maybe he wasn't all fucked up, but i hope for his sake he was, because he sure as hell looked like he was, and i'm sure i wasn't the only one who noticed, so for all intents and purposes he might as well have been. Who cares anyway, i thought rock stars were allowed to do those sorts of things and get away with it.

For me, this performance sealed the deal with the Hip.
I had bought Road Apples and loved it, then went on to purchase all the previous albums, awesome to catch up-a few new albums at once
Never was much of a concert goer
Well that night my wife says "hey the Tragically Hip are playing SNL tonight"
We stayed up & watched the performance - and couldn't stop laughing about it for days

After that, had to see them live, unfortunately I broke my back and couldn't see them that tour. My sister went (Toad's Place in New Haven) and got to sit down with them and they signed a photo they had of mine. I've seen them probably 12 times but never got to actually meet them.

I never really understood why this performance did not do more for the band south of the border. I know this topic has been discussed ad nauseam but it was a perfect opportunity for the band to catch on fire in the US. They delivered two of their anthems in such a memorable way. Maybe it was a case of too much too early, or too little too late :?

That year was one of the bad years for SNL itself in terms of ratings and cast changes
