Last night was the 15-year anniversary of the last-ever Another Roadside Attraction performance, which took place in Barrie, ONT. I was there; biggest TTH show I've ever been to. Just thought I'd give a shout-out to the old-timers on this board. Haven't been here in a very, very long time.

P.S. I saw My Morning Jacket live in Salt Lake City last night for FIVE BUCKS. Dollar-for-dollar, the best concert I've ever been to. I've been to better shows, but spent 10 times (or more) for tickets. If they come to your town, SEE THEM. Mindblowing live act.

I'm proud to say I attended all three Roadsides. My favorite is still the first one in '93 with Midnight Oil, Daniel Lanois, and Crash Vegas. What an incredible day of music. The Oils were such a powerful live act, and their set that day absolutely blew my socks off. I remember my friends and I saying to ourselves "how are the Hip gonna top that?" But when we heard the monstrous roar that greeted the boys when they hit the stage, it was clear who the headliners were. They opened with "Locked", and when the full band kicked in after the first verse, the mosh pit went bananas with crowd surfers flying through the air every couple of seconds. Early 90s Hip madness at it's peak. It was glorious. I was right near the front for a lot of that show, and I can remember spotting Midnight Oil's Peter Garrett and Rob Hirst at the side of the stage, bobbing their heads along to the Hip's music and tapping their feet. You could tell there was a great deal of respect and admiration between both bands.

By the time the second ARA rolled around in '95, the Hip were the biggest band this country had ever produced. They were bigger than Jesus at the time. It was crazy. This time I didn't dare venture towards the front. It was just too ridiculous.

The 3rd ARA in '97 arguably had the best lineup: Wilco, Los Lobos, Change of Heart, etc.. Another fantastic day of music.

About a year later on the Phantom Power tour, the Hip returned the favor and opened for Wilco in Columbus, OH I believe. I used to have the bootleg of that show.

Great comment, I went to both those 93 and 94 (canada day) and 95 shows, those crowds were absolutly CRAZY. But were all older now, and it seems the younger kids dont want to go crazy like that anymore, a lot of standing around taking iphone videos nowdays. I wish the Hip would release hours of cutting floor stuff from their Heksenketle video, you know they were recording all the shows in 93 from beginning to end so they have probably 30 hours of footage, they should make that available for us fans who want it, im sure they could upload it and have us pay to download each show in its entirity. I would so pay for that.

Unfortunately it was only a bootleg of the Hip's set, and the bands didn't perform together or anything like that. At the end of the show Gord says "Thank you! Wilco are up next!" That was really the only clue that they were the opening act at that show. But it would have been great if somebody had captured both bands' sets. This was back in the Jay Bennett days, and Wilco's live show was amazing. Not to say that they aren't great now. They are. But I would argue that they certainly had more of an edge to them in those days. A little more raucous. For example:

For me that's still my favorite incarnation of Wilco, only because it was my first introduction to them and I have very fond memories of it. Although an argument can be made that Nels Cline automatically makes them better now than they've ever been.

It wasn't Jeff, but "the other guy." Can't remember the name.

Stupidly enough, I wasn't all that into Wilco back in 97 and despite seeing them in Darien Lake on July 30 and Barrie on Aug 2 of that year for A.R.A., I didn't "get it." But years later, "A Ghost Is Born" changed that, and "Sky Blue Sky" along with "Wilco (The Album)" are weekly listens for me. Great, great band. I dig their earlier stuff too, and indeed it had more of an edge to it, but the newer stuff is just pure gorgeous bliss for me.

P.S. somewhere around here, I have not really a poster, but a very large ad (11x14 or so) from a newspaper that is the same image that Thip (Hi Dana!!!) posted earlier, but with probably the Darien Lake date on it (maybe the Barrie date too; maybe all of them. I don't remember). If you want, I can dig it out and post a pic of it. Come to think of it, that sucker deserves a frame!

Agreed on all counts. Over the course of their career and various incarnations they've become one of my favorite bands of all time, and I try to see them live any chance I get. As for "the other guy", that would have been Bob Egan. He was playing guitar, pedal steel and keyboards with Wilco at the time, and if you check the liner notes on Phantom Power, you'll notice that he played on Bobcaygeon in the studio with them as well. He's now a member of Blue Rodeo.

The only ARA I was was in '97 in Winnipeg. I was 14 at the time and liked the Henhouse show (my first Hip show) and the Phantom Power show I saw in Winnipeg much better than the ARA.

I really like Wilco now but didn't know them very well at the time other than "Outta Sight, Outta Mind." I remember Wilco played pretty early in the day and were getting pissed off about how chill the crowd was.
