Today is the American holiday for Thanksgiving. Canadians celebrated their Thanksgiving holiday last month. I have many reasons to be thankful and will only list the most dear to me because I could make it a very long list.
My greatest blessing is my family. I was born into a supportive and financially stable family. Why I received this blessing is beyond me, as I well know I could have been born into a family without these advantages. If I dwelled on this it would drive me crazy. Many families within mere miles of my home do not posses the same opportunities as I do. Even though I struggle with the same problems of everyday life that we all face, I know that no matter wether I succeed or fail, at the end of my day my wife and two children will give me their unconditional love and support. When my wife says " Hugh, we can get through this together", my outlook improves no matter how bleak the situation. When I come home from work depressed after a particularly hard shift, I am surprisingly uplifted by an unexpected hug or kiss from my children who gave it to me for no particular reason at all but because they love their dad. What a great feeling!!!!
Most of us are blessed to live in a free society where we have the opportunity to shape our own futures. These opportunities are stated in the U.S. Constituion, " Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness". While many of us take these words for granted, they are enforced and upheld not by the President, or Congress, or Judicial system, but the brave young men and women in our military and the brave veterans who preceeded us. For these young people sacrificing their lives for me, I am truely grateful!!
Even though my government mislead the nation as to the reasons for going to war, I feel that the soldier's sacrifice to protect my country are immeasurable. Our way of life was threatened on September11, 2001. Taking the war against terrorism into the homeland of those who would do us harm, has prevented further attacks on the North American Continent.
While my viewpoint is controversial and political, and possibly not the appropriate forum, I must be thankful for those putting their life on the line. When I hear of new casualties to our troops, I know that some family here has lost a son or daughter. I imagine myself losing one of my kids, and how I would feel. While this war is wrong in many ways, I must respect the bravery and fortitude of the U.S. military. Thank you for protecting my freedom and my way of life, and allowing me to gather with my family in peace, while sacrificing your time away from your own family.
On a lighter note, I am thankful for the Hipbase for being the great source of info on my favorite band. I am also thankful that our community has remained a forum for all points of view, and everyone has been given the opportunity to express their thoughts without the fear of spiteful criticism that I have witnessed on other sites. :thumb:
