Just listened to the Alan Cross interview with Paul, and he sounds pretty confident that a new Hip record will be released in 2011. Says the guys are all in a good head space, jamming, having fun, and the goal is "let's go in and make a killer record." Says they have a two month window right now where they'll be able to get a lot done. No mention of a producer, so I get the impression that they're producing it themselves. Sounds very promising. Here's the interview:

I think fans of the Bob Rock albums can agree that its time for a change.

I love what Paul said about making it fun. The whole band staying over at the bathouse, jamming late night. Great to hear!

They're not working with him this time around.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW you just made my day. I was hoping the Hip would take their next album into their own hands!! Its going to be a ridiculous record. I wonder what they mean by 2011 hopeful... I would kick a small child for a new album by the summer.

Would love to see a Butch Vig produced album. Won't happen but i can dream.. :-)
Smashing Pumpkins, Soul Asylum, Nirvana, Green Day, and of course Garbage - some of my all time favs in there.
