See if you can explain:
#1

This may not work for all phone #'s but try it. It is cool:

1) Key into a calculator the first 3 digits of your phone # (not including area code)
2) Multiply by 80
3)Add 1
4) Multiply by 250
5) Add last 4 digits of your phone #
6) Add last 4 digits of your phone # again
7) Subtract 250
8) Lastly, divide by 2

Is this your phone #???

I should have paid attention in school more . :wink: This is what i do know . Step 3 and step 7 are there to make it look more complicated .By adding one and then multipying the # by 250 you have 250 added on , step 7 then eliminates the 250 , so this step is only meant to make it seem more complicated . Step 4,6 and 8 are also meant to make it look more complicated . Change step 4 to 125 (in half) , eliminate step six (which doubles the last 4 digits of your phone number) and step 8 (which asks you to divide in half), and you still get your phone number . Basically by Multiplying your first 3 digits of your # by 80 , and then 125 you end up with a 7 digit # beginning with the first 3 numbers you entered and 4 zeros at the end (so your # X 10,000) , you then add the last 4 digits of your phone to this number and of course your full phone number is there . So to simplify this , do this ;

Step 1.Key into a calculator the first 3 digits of your phone # (not including area code)

Step 2. Multiply by 80 (or 40 if step 3 is 250)

Step 3. Multiply by 125

Step 4. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number




Now to fully solve this riddle , step 2 and 3 are also meant to confuse ,even in my example ...Take 80 and multiply it by 125 , (or 40 x250) and you get 10,000 .

So to simplify it more i'll use 379-1234 as the #

Step1. key in first 3 digits of phone number(ex.379)
Step2. multiply by 10,000 (379,0000) Or x80x125 (or 40 x250)
Step3. Add last 4 digits (379,1234)

So basically a bunch of steps added , to confuse a simple equation , and also kill 1 hour of my night . Hard to explain though. :lol: :lol: :lol:

It works for me too :thumb:

One thing you need to keep in mind is that you need to press the = button after each step otherwise it may not work.

Plus it only seems to work when your phone number consists of 7 digits.

This works for my number, my pager, my mother's number, my uncle in Calgary's number...clearly I lack a sense of pattern recognition. This is bizarre.

One thing I want to know - EVEN MORE than WHY it works - is how somebody figured it out. I mean, really, did someone sit there and multiply, divide, add, and subtract infinite times until it worked with a certain combination?? How did this occur to someone??

I think mark nailed it. Basically it's just a complicated way to multiply the first 3 digits of your phone number by 10,000 and then add the last 4 onto it.

Seems trickier than it actually is.

Actually Kim , you can make it work with any number of digits , if it's 8 numbers add another 0 to 80 or 250 , two zero's if there are nine numbers , 3 if there are ten , etc. etc. Just have to change it up a little . Big Grin
